98? G&L L-2500

Post by charlyg »

I just traded my 72 EBO and 05 Fender Deluxe V Jazz for a sunburst G&L L-2500 w/birdseye maple neck. I haven't exactly dated it yet but the s/n is CLF17675 which would be pre 2000, I think. It seems like a great bass, but I really know nothing about it other than I knew I could resell for as much or more than I have in the trade. I have a feeling I may want to keep it though! It has some interesting features! I need to clean it up a bit and take some pix. Hang on.......

Hey Charly, I had a 04 G&L 2500 in blueburst and it was a nice quality five string with lots of tonal possibilities due to the active circuits. I ended up selling though because every time I tried to get comfortable with standard five string spacing it always seems like I'm working to hard to cover the extra territory. Converting my 4004's to five strings fixed every problem I ever had trying to adapt to Fender, G&L, and MM fivers.

Got Pix, but still needs cleaning. All the metal is dull. The finish needs some scratch-x on the back.

I just removed the neck and discovered the date stamp......10 Apr 2000. Please disregard the 98?..........

I also have to say, I like the color better than my Monte!

It had a cracked headstock besides the crack in the body and neck. I don't recall seeing it when I first got it, so may be it happened at work or.......maybe I missed it, but I thought Eric would have seen it when he glued the neck on. It is very suspicious. I now have something that is actually worth something! The fellow I got the EBO from on ebay was gonna part it out, but I ended up bidding and being the only one! I had about 500 bucks in it and knew I wasn't gonna get that much any where else. So a modded MIM Fender Deluxe V(they go for 300-400 un modded) and my EBO for this G&L. The binding and birdseye were 700 extra according to a chap over at Talkbass. He is saying it would be $2000 new today.

Well it is definitely a nice bass, and it looks like you made out pretty well on the trade too! So, congratulations Charly :D

I cleaned it up and put some flats on it. I may be in love! I think I like the neck! The blue threaded string on the ends will not go through the body however. I need to find an alternative string for this beast. I am thinkingof TI Jazz rounds, or maybe GHS flat brites. I have no idea!! I am so stuck on Chromes I know little else. I used to use DR HIgh Beams yada yada, time to drive home...... CUL

A friend of mine has a 2500, and the stock strings were really stiff he said. So he put a set of DR Lo-Riders on it and he says the action is buttery soft now.

By whom? G&L make a nice 5-string, at a good price point. Hey, the majority of Chris Squire's basses are not Rickenbacker... and I own lots of basses that are not Rickenbacker, and so do most of the members of the forum, so what's to feel shunned about? :o

Well, other than you and Mark, no one gives a rip, and I am slowly falling in love with this bass. Next Sunday will be the true test.
