The Big TNT Show

Post by mcd220 »

Here are all three songs in two videos. For me, this really
encapsulates it all for me. Exciting because it's all live, and this
show was done right when "Folk-Rock" was king, late '65.

The Rubber Soul album wasn't quite out yet, and this was such a
magical time. After the intial wave of Beatlemania, but before the
psychedelic freak-out.

Buddy mentioned this before; Michael's different drum beat on "The
Bells Of Rhymney". I'm wondering if it's just mainly because of
his "Newness" to drums, he's just sort of "Hanging on" to a beat that
he can hear, just to keep time, etc in the face of all the screaming
perhaps?

The very best part though are the audience shots; that kind
of "Honest excuberance" gives me such a great feeling. We REALLY
LOVED bands, excuse me, I mean "GROUPS" back in those days...

All the kids clapping out of metre to the music only adds to it, as
well. :0)

The young girl shown at the end of "Turn"! (With her older friend)
almost looks like she could be a young Jane Pauley!! :0)

And during the panning of teenyboppers during "The Bells Of Rhymney",
which ends on the face of a jealous boyfriend, this is classic. :0)

Great for picking up David's guitar parts, as the Gretsche is really
up in the mix. His "Drop D" tuning is also very much in evidence here
too.

The old Fender Showman amps are classic as well.

As I mentioned, you can see Gene just all over the place with the
Tambourine.

Notice on the intro and outro of MTM, Chris doesn't hit that low "A"
connecting note between the slide-ups like Joe Osborne/Larry Knechtal
did, he just rides the "D"!! :0)

Chris DOES "Fake" the open A on the Swedish TV show from '67
though. :0)

Also notice Chris' picking hand; the position of his fingers without
question indicate the style and look as if he were playing Bluegrass
Mandolin.

Charming as hell.

Also notice how Roger does NOT play those Bm to A chord slashes during the outro of "Turn!", which proves the point that this was indeed an overdub (You can hear the B & E strings ring out on the record WITHOUT interuption)

And of course, that "Rough" mid sixties concert sound!! :0)

But who cares.

It's The Byrds.

I'm wondering if the entire show is still available on DVD anywhere.
This is a GREAT balance of artists: Ike & Tina Turner, Bo Diddley,
Roger Miller, Spoonful, Ronettes, Petula Clark, Donovan, etc.

I beleive it was actually shown on TV in early 1966. But yeah,
something very special for me about this show.

Even though I was only 4 1/2 when this aired, I can remember starting
Kindergarten the following year, and just the way the sky looked, the
way the air smelled in the Bay Area at the time.

Watching The Andy Griffith Show, and Fireball XL-5 in the mornings...

And the wonderful odor of JP-4 Jet fuel drifting up the peninsula in
the morning from San Francisco airport.

I know. I'm strange.

Thanks for posting the links to those clips. I'll always remember seeing McGuinn with those granny glasses. Who knows? It might have even been this very broadcast that I saw way back then. I thought they were rather funny looking. Loved that sound, though. And I still do.
