I saw a 4003 on Gbase that someone had made into a fretless that was still lined. I'm still keen as to get a fretless 4003!

My 4004C had it's frets pulled and the finish sanded off the board. Plastic lines were cut on the same radius as the board and glued in place. The board was sanded level again followed by sever coats of a watery epoxy until it stopped soaking in. Several people played it at So.Cal RIC Con '07 and seemed to like it. I wouldn't advise doeing this to a 4001/3 with shark tooth inlays as that material is not a good fretting surface and inconsistant with the wood. My luthier did the work.

No, but unlined fretlesses are easy to play once you get used to them. I had a lined J bass and couldn't stand it, kept looking at the neck all the time. I didn't know it was lined, I ordered it and was POed when I first saw it. Got rid of it quick.

Thanks Dane . Bob.. you have good ears . I own other fretless basses ( Godin , Zon , BC Rich ) and always have to look where I am to stay in pitch .
