Gene's Barritone-1st TV Appearance

Post by mcd220 »

Hey Guys-The Byrds first ever TV show appearance-Hullabaloo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMlFjssShz0

If you listen CAREFULLY starting at 1:56, you can HEAR Gene Clark's barritone part, that was basically cut from the record by the removal of Leon Russell's electric piano, which was on the same track.

NONE of the harmonies are up in the mix during the first chorus, but they are bled in during the second one.
Where you REALLY notice Gene's 3rd part, is on "Jingle jangle", coming in at 1:56.

I remember Buddy mentioning that it was one of The Dillards who stopped by the studio, to help arrange the vocals???
Music is "Faked" here, but the vocals are LIVE.

Pity the end of this vid is chopped, because Frankie Avalon comes out (The host that week), stands next to Gene, starts to announce the next acts, and Gene interrupts him saying; "And The Byrds IS comin' back"!!

You can tell it was'nt scripted, because of Frankie's reaction!

I've read that if you listen to the original recording w/headphones, you can just BARELY hear Gene's vocals via overbleed to Roger & David's mics, but I've never been able to hear it, really.

Later in the show, they return with "I'll feel a whole lot better"; same deal. Pre-recorded music, LIVE vocals. HOWEVER, there are alot of versions floating around out there on You tube and elsewhere, that have "Just the record" playing, appearing as being lip synched.
