Can't do 1974 but 'The complete guide to the electric guitar' (Virgin 1982) lists the 4001 @ £626 and the 4001fl @ £600. Incidently all guitars and basses are listed with a 1 to 5 star rating for quality, value, etc. The 4001 (fretted) gets a 5½ star rating for sound!

I bought my first 4001 back in 1974. I got it from Rose Morris on the Shaftesbury Ave, London. The wall price was 299 UKP, but I got it for 279 UKP paying cash. I couldn't afford a Rick case so I bought a cheapy hard case for an extra 18 UKP. It was my pride and joy... :D

thanks :)

we have been talking these days in our italian bass player forums where a guy says he purchased a Shaftesbury 4001 copy in London, 1974, for 650 UK pounds which sounded insane... He said he could not afford the real one and he went for a 650 £st copy...

The Shaftsbury semi acoustic '330' bass was around £60 in the Bells catalogue in the early '70's if I remember correctly.

It is bizarre to think that you can buy a new bass in the USA now cheaper that we in the UK were paying for one 25 years ago! :(

I thought so too Peter, although those '82 may be full list prices and on the high side.

I remember looking at a new JG 4001 in Canterbury in the autumn of 1980, and they wanted 350 quid, which seemed an awful lot of money at the time to a 17 year old...
