New 660 binding anomaly

Looks to me like the edge of the guitar was bumped somehow. This is a "shear defect" caused by a trauma to the clearcoat.

I could be wrong, but this is the best I can do without having the instrument in hand.

The fix for this--if, in fact, this is what it is--sounds scary, but it involves cutting into the clearcoat with a new #11 Exacto, opening the cut slightly, and filling the area with water-thin super glue. After a day or two, the area is sanded with #1000 paper and re-buffed. If this doesn't work, the area is sanded back to the binding and re-clear-coated.

Thanks Paul. Whatever the reason/cause, I'm just going to leave the binding as it is. Its not terribly noticeable. Of course if the guitar did suffer some "trauma" I could get it fixed and send the bill to Mitch Easter (its his old 381).

I recently noticed that a small area of the binding on my 381 seems a little weird. The black areas are faded and not as strong as the rest of the binding. The pic is a bit out of focus, but I think you can see what I mean. Any idea what may be the cause?

I thought Sylvain Sylvain's 381 was discussed somewhere here and it was determined that his was a Blue Boy. I'll see if I can find that info.

I just got my 660/12 AFG last week and noticed the same thing on my guitar.

My 360/6 and 360/12 had none of these binding issues so I am relieved to read from Paul that this is just a part of the hand made process.

I am assuming it is the same explanation as to why the top side neck near the fret board on my 660/12 the varnish seems to be a little heavy and uneven leaving some pock marks behind?

Is your 660 Blue Burst a 6 or a 12?

I have this same thing on the binding of my new AFG 660 and wasn't quite sure what was going on. It looks a little like the checkered binding was painted on (although, of course, I knew it wasn't. Can you imagine the work that would be involved in that?). I didn't bother me much but it sure is nice to know what it is.
