Bought a new bass!
Bought a new bass!
I had Presidents Day off this past Monday and got roped into going to the Dayton Mall with my wife and daughter. This wasnt too bad because it gave me an excuse to cruise into Guitar Center. I know,,,not a big deal, but hey! Its Monday and I dont have to work. After fingering the usual stock, I happened to notice they had the usual "event" sale going on. Nothing really yanked my chain except for this black Squire Jazz bass. I checked the tag, $179.00. Nah..,,then the salesman comes up and ask's "what will it take to sell you this bass today".
To make a long story short,, for $161.00 I got the bass, a real nice gig bag, and a set of D'Addario XL170's. Not bad eh???
Now,, I'm not a real fan of Squire basses,,but I've been wanting to pick up a Geddy Lee Jazz bass for quite some time, and in my closet I knew I had a really nice Phillip Kubicki maple neck with a Jazz/Precision profile from 1984. Hmmm.
The neck mated perfectly, I added a Fender bridge from the '70s and an old white (now slightly yellowed), pickguard and hey,,,,instant Geddy, only better.
Pics were taken on two different nights, It looks close enought to a Geddy to satisfy me, and plays like a dream. Im thinking of some nickle tuners and different pickups. Not bad for $161.00
Suggestions on the pickups???

Nice bass Jeremy. Are those "Tuki" covers you have on that Ampeg????
Super preamp John. I think I want to stay passive though. As I have it set up currently, the Jazz plays as good as any of my other basses, better than a couple actually. Im thinking Duncans, Barts, maybe just some vintage Fender pups.

Re: Bought a new bass!
Congrats Scott!
Scott, Jeff, John,
I used to own a Squier Vintage Jazz and thought it was an excellent instrument.
I currently own a Rondo SX Strat and am amazed what Asian labor can do for $100. It is now my main at home practice guitar.
Both companies IMHO offer great value for the money.
I am this close to getting the SX bass but believe it is very short scale (30") and I prefer 32".
Anyone own/play one?
Does it feel tiny?
Thanks.

I would go Duncans. I like his Vintage or Antiquaties (spl?).
