Surf On This!
Surf On This!
Knew this was was due up ...I WILL keep this one active..hah! First up a favorite Dick Dale video...Dick eats pizza!
Re: Surf On This!
You have to be taken by the energy of Dick Dale. He is a tough surf act to follow. It would be interesting to learn more about his musical influences. Some of his arrangements, at least to my ears, use scales that I have associated with Ravi Shankar.

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Re: Surf On This!
Excellent observation Peter. Dick was born in Lebanon and as a youngster exposed to Eastern tonalities. Many of his scales are somwhat middle eastern and he his no stanger to using open strings in a drone like fashion. His pattern of syncopated double picking is according to Dick, influnced by the drumming of Buudy Rich....Dick plays in a very percussive style. Here's an oft posted vid from the movie Back To The Beach..pre-Pulp Fiction.admin wrote:You have to be taken by the energy of Dick Dale. He is a tough surf act to follow. Re: Surf On This!
Thanks for this history of Dick Dale, George. My son overhead me listening to Dick Dale the other day and thought I was "so cool." He made the Pulp Fiction connection immediately. The music of Dick Dale is hard to forget. Oh yes, and cool too!

One of the hottest surf bands on the circuit is Slacktone...due in no small part to everyone's favorite surf drummer and a great guy Dusty Watson...

The Eliminators are one of the best Trad surf bands out there...here's their take on Comache...
Re: Surf On This!
My pleasure. At one point, Dale went after the band The Lively Ones (I believe) to become the replacement Del-Tones as long as they dropped their own lead player. They refused, instead sticking together and recording many more surf and instrumental songs.kenposurf wrote:This one's a hoot! Seven piece band w/two other guitarist's besides Dick! Re: Surf On This!

Re: Surf On This!
The Astronauts were best known for Baja. The group did not start out as a surf band but ended up riding the first wave, This one is called Firewater...ahhh matching guitars!
Re: Surf On This!
Also, the figure carrying the surf board on their first album is not a man, but an airbrushed woman according to the CD liner notes.kenposurf wrote:The Astronauts were best known for Baja.
