Jeeeeezzzzz!! Will this ever end? Jake: if you're undecided (again) about what you want then do nothing!! Study up, get good grades and score lots of points with your mum and dad. Maybe by then you will have decided what you REALLY want and they'll be prepared to help you. I say "help you" because in my opinion you need to put something toward this purchase - whatever that might be........... seems to me you're expecting a lot for little effort.

John, she's ten and lived in Brasil for about 3 1/2 years, beginning when she was 4 1/2...the best time to learn a new language. She also goes back each summer for an extended family visit (2-3 months).

In short, she's a native speaker, with no trace of accent. And her English is the same...native, no trace of accent. (She came in Third in the Marin County Elementary spelling bee, against several hundred students. She's pretty skilled in the language department.

I apologize for the proud papa speech...

+1 Paul and Scott. And Scott, glad you posted that picture, as I figured you were exaggerating just a bit. Great to see you are honest!

If the proud parent syndrome was missing, I’d say there might be something wrong. #1 is at Virginia Tech in doing well in Aerospace Engineering program. #2 doing a great job finishing off high school getting ready to start the college scene – the excitement of it all!!! #3 just doing well in first year of high school – JV soccer and working on Eagle Scout stuff. I am so proud of all three I could sometimes bust! They are all three very neat people! Like Scott said – “Never apologize for being proud.”

I couldn't agree more. Besides, with all you guys bragging, I don't feel so guilty for having identical thoughts.

That's great, Tom. I know what you mean, neat people. I've said it for years, since they've been off to college and life, that I really love having them around because they are just fun and great people. My son is such a better human being than I am - I am sooo proud of him also.

Great thought John...and isn't that whole idea? If our children turn out to be better (in every way) than we are, then someone did something right! I tend to think of how well my kids have done in spite of the parenting they received  .

My sentiments exactly. I guess I always appealed to their sense of fair play, treated them as valid people, supported them in what they wanted to undertake, appealed to a sense of "we are all in this together," always tried to be their friend but never letting them forget I was their Dad (and all that implies), and always tried to be there for them and offer advice when they asked but let them decide what to do in the end (still do!). Didn't get too many dumb decisions (and only one bad one) out of that, and thats with all three of them. All to their credit, not mine or Irene's.

I was not sure I wanted to bring children into the world as it was back in 1980 (even less sure today! ) when we found out we were pregnant. One thing I realized right off though is that they did not ask to be born. It was up to me to step up and be the father they needed. My father took care of things and provided when I grew up, and it was my turn to do that for my offspring.

I think that's the best thing you can offer your children - letting them know you're there for them, regardless. And being proud is great - it's not "ooh, look at how great MY kid is," because everyone grows as their own person. My daughter is four, and she's beautiful and brilliant, and I can sure tell you it's not because of me! :) But, seriously, she is her own person, and I will be there for her in whatever ways she needs. If she wants to become a professional musician someday, I will encourage her, and also give her as much realistic feedback as my experience befits!

Hopefully I can explain to her what I wish had been explained to me better, which is that to be really smart about your life and getting what you want, it's important to pay attention to certain signs from the universe telling you where to go. I ignored most of mine, and here I am, a starving, divorced "musician" with about 13 units of junior college under my belt at 37, who can't afford a backup Ricky to my beautiful V63. (At least I have it and a gig that does pay the rent-ish.) To get the things you want sometimes requires doing things which initially seems counterintuitive.

The real trick is to try to be happy and content in the now with that which is around you! (I have a hard time with that one, I must admit.)

I've got enough money for this. I'm in need of a twangy sound. I want to be able to nail the Stones sound. This has my name on it...I'm buying it without looking back!
