hello, new to the forums
hey everyone, my names chris. I've been playing bass for about 5 years and was a devoted user of P-basses. I joined a band 2 weeks ago that has a midnight blue 4003 that i get to use and since picking that thing up ive been hooked. since playing it i decided that for our tour in june i should probably pick up one (or two
) of my own rics as a backup. looking on here the 2 colors that have really caught my eye has been the blue boy and sea green. how hard are those to track down and how much would i be looking at spending?

Blueboy is a relatively recent Color of the Year (2004) and is available only on the secondary market (used). Sea Green is very rare and was the COY for 2000. It apparently wasn't very popular and comparatively few made (we have no numbers). If you register here, you'll be able to see the "Ricks for Sale" department of the Forum and there has been some recent chatter on Blueboys.
Recent sales suggest between $1500 and $2500 for a Blueboy in decent shape. I was the last Forumite to buy a Sea Green bass (from another Forumite) last April, and I spent a lot more (but I just HAD to have a Sea Green). I think there may be two or three more Sea Green basses owned by Forumites, and I've seen photos of one or two more scattered about the globe. I wouldn't get my hopes up in finding one.
Oh, and welcome aboard, Chris!

yeah there was a blueboy on ebay last week for $2000 and im kicking myself in the butt right now for not buying it. it was in great shape. i think maybe i should start with a jetglo or something just so i have one and try to find one of the others later on. ive also seen one that a bass player im a fan of plays, its all red with black hardware and a black pickguard. but im not sure if thats a special color scheme or not. its really nice tho.
but sea green. oh man. i need one
where is the for sale section on here?

Red with black trim is uncommon, but not as rare as, say, Sea Green. Red came in a couple variations: Red on the standard 4003 (bound body and neck, triangular fretboard markers, stereo) and the very rare "Redneck" (4003SPC) which had no binding, but was overall red (even the fretboard - a maple one) with tiny "microdot" fret markers. We don't know exactly how many "Rednecks" were made, but it was a certificated special edition, and there were a handful of 8-string Rednecks made as well. Here are examples of both (from the Ted Staberow collection):

Hi Chris, Welcome to the forum, you'll really enjoy it here. Here's a pic of my BB. A very "under-rated" finish in my opinion.

Welcome, Chris!
There is also a Rickenbacker Wanted section, if you haven't already found it, where you can post.
I'll be nice and not post a picture of my 4003 BB (which is not currently for sale)!

Scott, that Blueboy is gorgeous. I should have ordered one when they were still made but didn't... I wanted a C64 in Blueboy but RIC didn't offer that option.

Welcome Chris. I am fairly new myself, although I've own a Rick for a couple years. I first got a FG because it was the only one available when I was buying, but fond I like the Jetglo better, but now I am craving to own the Redneck. Well, long story short, your carvings won't stop there. So, once again, welcome, and remember half the fun is the search

Re: hello, new to the forums
scott you have made me beyond jealous. haha that is a beautiful instrument
paul, the one that he has isnt the redneck its the other one with just the black pickguard. still really cool tho.
i think my dreams of a blueboy or sea green ric are going to be put on hold for a while. im leaving for tour in about a month and a half and i need a backup ric, so ill probably start out with a jetglo. still nice, just not what i want

It may not be done in time for your tour, but you could have one refinished to whatever color you want.billcosby wrote:scott you have made me beyond jealous. haha that is a beautiful instrument

I never even thought about refinishing one...
