Revenge on Ebay
This bass popped up here as the subject of some questions, and here are the answers. This is one ****** off Ebayer, and I would say he has a right to be!

"They make great f***'n basses". - Lemmy, NAMM 2009
Yes, I contacted the seller because he lived just north of atlanta....I asked him about the finish and he said that he and the owner had talked it over and thought that it MIGHT be a Re-finish...I asked him to look under the pickguard and tell me what the original finish was...he didn't answer the question but he was going to let me come out and look at it..however, I got called in for a job on the last 2 days of the auction and couldn't go check it out...I was pretty surprised when it sold for as high a price as it did...cracked guard and suspicious finish. well, at least the new owner is honest enough to tell the truth and probably bite the bullet on that one.

That's a problem with ebay ... a bass can be photographed and described and look really good ... and in reality be a piece of **** ... buyer beware ... I have got screwed a few times ...
When I got my 1990 4003s5 Midnight Blue with black trim ... at first I thought I was screwed ... the tailpiece was pulling up really badly, there were a few chips in the blue paint and the silver underneath was showing through, the bridge was inserted backwards ... it needed a cleanup and setup ... but once I worked on it a few hours it turned out to be an exceptional bass ...
Every single Ric with ric-o-sound that I got off of ebay had a broken ric-o-sound ... my 4004L came rewired in a lame way ... I got a jazz bass with a stripped truss rod ...
I even had a guy cash my check, then he sold the item to someone else, and left me negative feedback .... can you say crook ... I didn't get too concerned because the sale price was $1 ...

Well, I saw the original auction and that bass just didn't look right at all to me. It looked like a really odd refin and had noticeable rust on the jacks and aroung the pickguard screws. The color didn't look like any factory finish, the body and fretboard finishes looked flat compared to the gloss on the chrome. Some things were obviously not right.
That doesn't excuse the seller at all, but it seems the buyer didn't ask enough questions beforehand. The seller is a bicycle guy and considering his otherwise great feedback it's probably just ignorance on his part, not malice.

Must be something about bicycle guys!!! Anybody remember that fretless 4005 with the strange fretlines a few months ago that I went and saw in person? That bass was totally misrepresented in the description on ebay, and he was big on selling bicycles on the bay. He showed me his garage full of old bicycles he was selling; most of them were junk.
There's something to be said for researching and questioning the snot out of something you're going to lay down over a grand for. This doesn't excuse bad sellers on ebay however. As ****** as I would be, I'd have to look at the facts and realize I didn't do my homework before throwing money at the bass... I still feel bad for the guy though, I don't like Ricks being used in vain...
