Ah, much better!
Great early pictures - still a FG RM1999 at that point?
I was probably sitting in Trig or Coll. English in my senior year of HS when those were taken.

Oh, No... please don't get me started on this!
I like that pic of Chris with the 4001S, seen it many times, even on other forum threads. My question remains unanswered. IF that is Chris's original RM1999 that was refinished yellow, then when was that picture taken? Chris himself has stated that the refinishing was done before the recording of the first Yes album, but he appears in videos with this bass playing songs from "Time and a word" as late as 1970.
Here is a pic of a very young Chris Squire with The Syn, playing what appears to be his FG RM1999. It does not look, to me, to be the same bass as in the above links. I know it went through some "customizing" before the famous final refinishing, but again, Chris states that it happened before the 1969 recording of YES. If so, which bass is in the picture in Michael's link above?

is Chris STILL using that Marshall amp?

Mixed in with all those pics was this YES fan....
Man, 60's Ricks and 60's chicks. It just doesn't get any better than that.

Re: Earley YES Pictures..2 Ricks ;)
what i can gather is during the yes album era, chris got his 2nd ric. The model is a 4001. It has triangular inlays and has binding too. Even in the fragile cd album booklet, you get to see the 2 ricks together at home with Chris. 4001s and the 4001.
By the way, what is chris playing during roundabout on the live at QPR 1975 dvd? It seems to be an 8string rickenbacker with 4 large bass tuning pegs and 4 guitar pegs. The head is different too.

Chris was playing one of two Rickenbacker 4008 prototypes that FC Hall gave him. The headstock was broken off sometime before 1978 and was subsequently traded to Vince Gallow.

Dane...Vincent has no "W" in his surname. It seems these days, many think no "W" would be a good thing...aceonbass wrote:Chris was playing one of two Rickenbacker 4008 prototypes that FC Hall gave him. The headstock was broken off sometime before 1978 and was subsequently traded to Vince Gallow.

...but that's politics, isn't it? Wints, how's that emeraldglo 4001S doing these days? Someday I may ask you for hi-res picks of that bass and you can probably guess for what reason (hint: last name ethnicity)wints wrote:Dane...Vincent has no "W" in his surname. Chris plays his 4008 8 string on QPR, but the real shocker for me in that video, besides the complete lack of a sound mix, is his use of a F****r bass for "Yours is no disgrace! True, it was their experimental period.
I hope Chris brings his Mouradian Reality Bass out on this tour. It's one of my favorites

Hi Jim,Hi Wints,
I saw Chris with the "deluxe"4001 and the Tele bass in the early days and I think the RM was being repaired/re-finished.
The Jazz bass was used on "The Ancient" during the Tales tour initially.Theres some great footage of Chris recording Parallels with that bass if you go on youtube and check out all the GFTO sessions.I found it invaluable for learning that song....there are edits for the final cut though.
At QPR football ground they had just done Sweet Dreams with the Jazz and (you should ask Chris this) theres always the possibility that the roadie had taken the Rick away leaving Chris with no option but to start YIND with the Jazz. During the break for the guitar solo the Rick arrives for the end of the song.
I am not absolutely certain but I think the "potato head" 8string was used on Awaken and later for the tour Rick Wakeman gave Chris the WAL triple neck that Roger Newell used in his English Rock Ensemble in order to cover the different guitars used on the track.
When Newell had the bass the top neck was still a six string and originally the bass was going to be a double neck but Wakeman suggested adding the third neck to be more outrageous!
Chris had the six sting converted to emulate the top strings of an eight string bass.
Heres the before and after....................

Jim, no, no politics here, just correct surnames...Anything else is purely coincidental...
Let me know about the green monster, no problem there my ol' shamrock!

Pete, I saw Roger play that Wal in '75 during the King Arthur tour. I was about 15' in front of Roger the whole time; fantastic!!!

Re: Earley YES Pictures..2 Ricks ;)
Wints, maybe for next St Patty's day!
I came close to pulling the trigger on a 4001CS that was on ebay in January and close by here for $3k; had I done that, I would have changed the refin on my current 4001S to match your green burst. That one is high on my list of favorite finishes and I may pick up another set neck 4001S and have it done in emeraldglo as well someday. I have to get the first one finished before I set out on another project. Maybe on my next trip to Florida... how close do you live to Tony Cabibe?
Pete, I haven't spoken to Chris since that last call - I imagine he's busy, but I plan to try to get in touch before the tour starts. I'll let you know how it goes. To be honest, I was quite surprised the first time to have actually catch him at home.
I listened to FOOW this morning while editing and always get the urge to ring him up and remind him how great he is and to keep the music coming. Imagine how expensive that would get after a while.
