Narrowing it down...

Post by ynnad »

Hi,

I'm looking for my perfect rickenbacker bass as i've finally got some decent money saved; I had an '02 4003 in midnight blue a little while ago but for various reasons had to sell it. This didn't hurt me too much because though i loved the sound i'd already decided it wasn't 'the one' for me. The sharkfin inlays, binding, fat neck and overall erm blue-ness all just made me yearn for what I really wanted. That being a rick with no binding, dots and in fireglo!

I found a 4003s which pretty much covered it but on trying it out the neck was huge and it had the ugliest (to me) stubby headstock i've ever seen on a rickenbacker. So i turned it down.

Now I know I'd like either a 4001v63 or a 4001c64...both being impossible to find in the wasteland of 360/12's that is the UK. So, i'm pretty much banished to the internet to find one...meaning i'm going to have to buy it pretty much on faith, so as i can't whinge when it doesn't turn out what i want it to be I'd like to try and get it right. A slim neck is quite important to me - my 4003 must have been 1/4 an inch thicker all round (no joke!) than the P bass i've been playing inbetween, i've found i play better when it's a bit slimmer - from lurking i've read that different years mean different sizes...

So to finally get to my question, , can you rixperts point me in the direction of the bass I'd like? What year production am I looking for etc and hey, if anybody has one going, can we talk! :D

Danny

Welcome Danny!

4001c64's of any year will have a nice, slim neck. 4001v63's from the late 80's to the early/mid 90's will have slim necks as well.

Thanks John_B! For the info, quick reply AND welcome.

I think i'll be going for the c64 then as, call me shallow, the shinier the better! Scratch that, ricks are always shiny - thank god - so that'll keep my options open hehe

Btw, is that a fretless 4005 you have? :o

Yup, but it won't be fretless for much longer!
