Thought I'd revive this thread with an interesting clip of John and his 4005.

Don't know if the bass is live or not, but it's certainly up front in this version!

I read somewhere that John enjoyed the necks of Ricks, they were his personal favorite, next to the P-bass neck (which I think is a totally different animal).

Recently I saw some vids on YouTube, where JAE was playing a Lightshow live! Unfortunately I can't remember the song(s), but if you search you'll find it.

Man, this thread is all over the place!!!

Jane Fonda to the tune of "Zoot Suit?" Crazy.

Someone here probably knows who it was said to, but I heard that in the sixties, Ox-man said to someone "Rickenbackers go out of tune when you close the lid of the case." Which, at the time, may have been accurate, in terms of thin necks on period basses. Vince, chime in!

I should have asked him - like a lot of folks on the forum, I got to hang out with him once. We talked about mellophones. I was fan-boy gone berserk.

And yes, I think the tone he was getting in his later days was garbage. Distortion is good, overdrive is good; fuzz is dumb (if left on all the time), clarity is lost. It worked well on the choruses of this song, though:

Eminence was the last Who song of any quality in my humble...

The bass here is great, but that's Entwistle still playing good, and of course, it's an Alembic....

Just finished watching the VH1 Rock Honors with the Who.

Foo Fighters were FANTASTIC! In my mind, they captured the spirit of the Who.

When the Who themselves came on....what a letdown. Roger was having trouble singing his own lines, and Pete was trying to rock out in a suit jacket.
Now....this is just me.....but rarely does true rock occur when the members are wearing suit coats. (Beatles Excepted) I can't help but feel they have lost it, the only one who had "it" was the drummer!
Pino was so far in the background that he was on screen for 2 seconds in the first song and only during the solos on My Generation. NOTHING like JE.

The Who for me was about rebellion, anger, passion and fire. Sadly, none of it was displayed that night. Except for the petty little interchange between Pete and Roger about how Roger should really try writing his own songs, because he had 48 pieces of plastic. (whatever that meant).
"They make great f***'n basses". - Lemmy, NAMM 2009
