Funny, on a lot of songwriting sites I posted this on, people keep attributing the opening chord progression to Brian Setzer, because of "Stray Cat Strut" by Stray Cats. And to my amazement, they thought the pattern belonged to him. But that descending pattern has been in so many songs..."Hit the Road Jack", "Walk Don't Run", countless songs by Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, even Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Sometimes our memories are short.

But it DOES sound a lot like Stray Cat Strut...

THAT'S why I suddenly started playing "Stray Cat Strut" on my geetar the other day! Seriously, I wondered why I would pull that out of nowhere. If I start playing something from the 80s, it's usually an REM or Church song, which are pretty ingrained in my brain by now. But I hadn't heard or thought about SCS in many years, and couldn't understand why it suddenly came to mind. Mystery solved.

And, by the way, I don't think rock music is really about originality. As Don Henley--someone who I generally do not quote--once said, rock music requires a high tolerance for repetition. I assume he meant that in a good way.

FWIW, I think your song is more clever than SCS.

Thanks Mark and Kira. This is sort of a Partidge Family thing...I got my 12 year old daughter Lucy to play the sax, and my 14 year old daughter Madeline to play the violin and the Zombette. They are receiving an unorthodox upbringing, filled with sax and violins.
