Hey Bulldog

Post by lyle_from_minneapolis »

So, if I were to do a cover, who would I pick first? I couldn't resist. I'm still teaching myself how to improve my production, and doing a cover is a great way to learn. And fun! I'd love to hear what it needs, other than the original players.

This is by Lennon-McCartney, 1968.

Cool, Mark!
I've always thought that song was one of the sleeping masterpieces of the Beatles. Have you heard the alternate takes of it, and the cut-out footage from "Yellow Submarine?"
That song's been in my repertoire since forever, and is a real crowd pleaser.

You've done a spot-on tribute, great. It's so much fun when you can nail a Beatles' song!
But the song could hold its own in a more liberal interpretation too, it's so good.

Very nice, Mark. As simple as the song sounds to many a ear, it's a difficult tune to cover. You've done it up fine.

Just excellent! Thanks Mark.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

HA! Well done, Sir! Right down to the nice ambient drum sound, and accurate reproduction of the stereo spectrum. You do a great job getting Lennon's vocal tone, too. Sounds like you had fun with the barking parts at the end! The bass tone sounds pretty spot-on to the original, too. Did you use a Rick bass? I don't know whether or not McCartney was recording with his Rick in '68.

Thanks Kira, Stan, Peter, Ruben and Mark!

Well of COURSE I used my '72 Burgundyglo Rickenbacker brand 4001 on this one. Like, duh!

Mark, Paul did indeed use his Rick on this one, and we know for sure because they filmed the session. That "Lady Madonna" video was actually comprised of footage from the recording of "Hey Bulldog". Lennon wanted to record this before they took off for India, but they also needed to film footage for the other song. They decided no one would notice if they filmed this session and used the footage on the Madonna thing, and they were right. In fact, here it is, in it's Bulldog form:

Thanks for all the good words. I just wanted to try to see how close I could come, and sure enough, just doing that taught me a lot of things... those boys were masters of craft...but of course they did it off the cuff in a matter of hours. :|
