"Dominoes"

Post by kiramdear »

Hi folk,
I'm back with another humble offering for your perusal. This one's called "Dominoes", and it's not a lot different than the last ones except for the upgrade to the use of condenser mikes 8) Use of my beautiful 320 for the wah-wah accents, second guitar and lead fill at the end of the song. My magnificent 4001 lumbers its way through like a brontosaurus.

I'll let the lyrics speak for the theme of the song:

Dominoes

constantly working and building and saving to get what is coming to me
my dream house, my shiny car
running the rat race with things as they happen, it all makes good sense now to me
I'm hitched to that falling star

wheels and deals and well-laid plans all go to pieces when it hits the fan

where were the federal men when the black tide broke the levee
and oh, how the people all felt as we all fell into queue
just like dominoes

gunshots and sirens and rising black water, how could this be happening to you
this is not my beautiful home
maybe when things get a little bit better I'll find my way back home to you
till then, love, I'll walk alone

Sounds great, Kira! Me likes.

I particularly like the "wheels and deals..." bridge. And I take it the "where were the federal men..." verse refers to the victims of hurricane Katrina. Your solo at the end sounds great on the 320 with that bit of "edge". Did you mic up an amp for the guitar or did you go direct?

You also have a unique voice that really fits your musical style and it sounds like your new mic is working out well. Looking forward to hearing more from you.

I so glad it pleases :) The federal men line was what led the lyric work. That was improv from the instrument sessions last week The rest was done yesterday, improv as usual spinning a story around that line. I just kept thinking about Fats. The progression was written a few months ago; melody added and instrumental parts fleshed out just prior to recording, bass added late in the story. Guitar very simple, bridge p'up with a little middle mixed in, my modeling amp on overdrive channel w reverb and line out into the board and through to the mac. A little echo added in GarageBand.
It's a weird one and I'm not sure I want to take responsibility... I don't really want to write political songs; I'm a dramatist. I channel different singers on songs, usually I ask myself before each vocal "who am I now?" .Well I don't know who I was on this song, just someone with a low sad voice.

I'm glad you're among the very first people to comment!

Kira: Another corker Kira. I especially like the feel of yesterday wrapped in the "goings on" of today.

Another fresh number in keeping with your own unqiue style with hints of those influences that have shaped your talent.

I hear a Lennon move with the vocal lyic and melody "as we all feel into queue" and tied up neatly at the end with a Stephen Stills lead.

Thanks for this, you new microphone works fine at this end.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

So, where does the line form to sign up for the Kira Moon Fan Club? That is one good song! I want to write songs like that when I grow up.

Ah, I awake to the roar of the crowd... it's gonna be a good day!

I think I only borrowed one line this time, at least consciously: "this is not my beautiful home", from David Byrne.

Teasing aside - thanks so much, guys. Your input is truly appreciated.

What a treat!

You really have style just falling out of all pockets and drawers. EXCELLENT solo after the second chorus...channeled a little Stills or Young there. Lots of mix candy again, great fun with the stereo spectrum. Kind of wish there was more volume or bite to the rhythm guitar that's panned in the right side, you hear it after the first chorus...

Yes, that 4001 DOES lumber like a bronto!

Love to hear the"constant hook" you always bring to the table. Great song, Kira!

Aw shucks,

I'm really grateful for supportive words. Sometimes I think all this stuff would only make sense to me alone :( but you're here to prove me wrong.

The next one is coming very soon, everything's done but the vocals and I'm just waiting till I have the boat to myself for a few hours. It's the usual deja vu all over again, a kinda seventies thing with sixties lyrics called "No Good At Goodbyes".

Oh Kira,

What are we going to do without you around here when you become famous? You are constantly and consistently turning out great tunes. I love your stuff...........it is so very different and so cool. 8) Good luck with the CD. There's an audience out there waiting for you.

Another nice one, Kira! I think Mark Kaufman summed it up well in his words. To add to the style references, this song put me in the mind of David Bowie with your use of melody, and The Beatles a bit, too, in atmospheric quality. I could imagine this being on The White Album or perhaps as early as Rubber Soul. I liked the layering of all the instrumentation, too. You obviously like to use many colors from your pallet, and you use them well.
