What kind of mic is this?
Re: What kind of mic is this?
I am pretty sure it is an EV, but I can't recall the model at the moment.
Re: What kind of mic is this?
ElectroVoice? It's a vocal performance mike? That's what I've been using it for, based on the look of it.

Re: What kind of mic is this?
Possibly, or an ENG mic.
Re: What kind of mic is this?
Thanks, Jeff, but I'm more interested in what it's good for.

Re: What kind of mic is this?
Has it worked well for the applications you've tried it on, or is this a new acquisition? Just try it on different things and if it sounds good, then it is. So many people get hung up on "this mic is only good for this ________" kind of thinking, but I feel that mics can do more than their supposed "role".
Re: What kind of mic is this?
That's true, Jeff. I used it a couple of times for our jam sessions and it seemed fine for vocals. That's the only thing I've used it for. I wondered about the pattern, if it's a cardoid.

Re: What kind of mic is this?
Most likely it is cardioid, or perhaps it may be hypercardioid, especially it it was initially intended as an ENG mic. Try it on your Martin to see how well it does as a full range mic.
Re: What kind of mic is this?
I'm sure it would ( or does) work fine for performance. It does look to be an old EV. I used them, many moons ago, while in broadcasting. They were used frequently for remotes, interviews, but not as a primary studio mic. They could take a lot of abuse.
Re: What kind of mic is this?
I actually let the guys use it so my SM58 won't smell like beer.

Re: What kind of mic is this?
It's a great mic for beer breath. Can also be used as a ball peen hammer. Candidly, we used to call them 'doorstops', but heck if they work for what you need them for, call 'em anything you like.

Re: What kind of mic is this?
I got an first gen 424 portastudio with original pedal and transformer in working condition, instrument and board cables, three or four good twenty footers and a slew of shorties, two twenty-foot mic cables, that mic and another ****** one, for sixty bucks

Re: What kind of mic is this?
You guys beat me to it. I was gonna say those old EV mic's make great hammers and still have a decent sound. They are tougher than nails. I've got an old EV635A that's been kicking around for 30+ years and still going strong...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...
