Jeff, from the first pic, it looks like the right nut is tightened further than the left one. It is also not centered in the hole. That supports my theory of the rod being curved and rotated inside. I would pull the rods out....

Where in Michigan are you?

A town called Belleville, halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor.

I had the same problem with my '97 4003FG...

Post by heinpete »

...it was due to not equally tightened TRs. The real problem is that if you tighten them equally strong the neck gets either twisted or banana-shaped the one or the other direction. So it is a very difficult adjustment to avoid the side bow of the neck and on the other hand adjust the front-to-back bow of the neck. It took me some time to get all the parameters right. As a curiosity I realized that my '74 4001 did not have this problem, allthough the 4001 is supposed to have a "weaker" neck!?

Welcome to the forum, fellow Michigander! Nice bass, hope it can be brought back to perfection!

Peter, I trust from your comments that the outcome was positive. Is this true?

Ah, Michigander! A terrific and seldom-used term that can be endlessly punned.

Somebody with more enthusiasm than smarts has been messing with those rods--the paint is chipped from the acorn nuts, too, indicating that they were held with a socket (at least I hope it was a socket--I've seen plier marks on these, too...) while excessive force was applied to the other end. If the rods are tightened with an appropriately sensitive touch, they should not rotate; the star washer is put there to grab the wood of the counterbore and prevent this from happening.

I concur that a flipped rod is very likely from these observations.

Jeff, I would first remove the strings, then back off the truss nuts all the way to no contact so there is no tension on the neck, then wait a day or two to see what the neck does - remains as is or straightens. Use a straight edge (make sure it is truly straight) and check it. If it is straight, then you are good to go with a correct setup. If there is still the sidebow, then the rods should come out to check them and let the neck straighten on its own before reinsertion.

I am about 110 miles from you and if it comes to it, we could get together on a Saturday and see what gives with this.

Paul, you say Michigander; I say Michiganian. Seriously, I hear both but usually say I'm from Michigan. I prefer Michigander, myself.

I prefer Michigander too. I think Jennifer coined the word Michiganian.

Thanks for the welcome Steve, Southfield is pretty close to me!

John, thanks for the advice. I'll give it a shot! I have a gig this weekend, and after that I'll remove the strings and loosen the truss nuts.

I agree Ken, better than Michigoose, anyway!

Ken, Jenifer has done much good for Michigan (NOT!!!!!!), but that is not one of them. I remember hearing Michiganian back in the 50s and it was probably coined way before that.

Hey John, remember when John Candy came to Michigan and met with Granholm? I still have the video...
