Looking for a job in the US of A

Post by gibsonlp »

Hi guys,
My wife, Kareene and I are looking to relocate to the states and would love to find a job for at least one of us before the move (very hard, but at least I am trying...)
We are both professional UNIX sysadmins with over 10 years of experience, Kareene is more into traditional environment and will basically know every bit inside Solaris 2.5.1 to 9 (not enough experience in 10 for now).
I am more into Linux, BSD or any other OS with CLI...
Kareene is American, I am entitled to a work permit (and later on - a greencard) by marriage.
We are currently looking for positions in both east and west coasts, on the east - New England area, preferably Boston
On the west - LA or SF area.
DC area is also a possibility

Currently we plan to move anyway around April, if we find something before - we will move earlier.
CVs and references are available upon request.

Thanks in advance!
So long and thanks for all the fish!

Gil, you might try looking on the various cities' Craigslists. For example, when I searched the Boston Jobs section for the keyword "unix", it came back with 173 hits.

http://boston.craigslist.org/search/jjj?query=UNIX

Of course, you can refine the search with more appropriate keywords.

One thing I might advise is that you indicate in your cover letter/e-mail that relocation will not be a problem, assuming, of course, that you want to make the move whether the company pays for the relocation or not. I don't know how it is in the IT/computer field, but in my field (chemistry) some positions qualify for relocation reimbursement, others don't.

How about Nova Scotia? Peter can hire you to be the systems administrator for the RRF.

Oh wait, you already do that for free.

Of course, we are all grateful for that! :D :D :D

Hi Gil. Boston is certainly a mecca for tech jobs on the Eastern Seaboard. Someone with your knowledge & experience should not have any trouble finding work in this area.

At http://www.boston.com/jobs/ there were 210 hits for IT/Software development when I searched UNIX.

http://boston.monster.com/search.aspx?q ... &y=0&cy=us

Could also try:

http://www.boston.computerjobs.com/

http://information-technology.careerbui ... n_tech_job

http://www.dice.com/

Best of luck to you both on your relocation. I am about 30 miles north of Beantown. Feel free to ask if I can be of assistance.

Thanks guys for sending the links!

Kira: nopes, no children planned for the foreseeable future. Only the thought of buying diapers instead of Ricks makes me shiver! :)
Jeffery: I wish, I'd love living so up north :|

Good luck with the move and the job hunt, Gil. Maybe we'll get to meet you and Kareene at a future confluence.

So far, no luck, I didn't spread my CV too much, wanted to see the reaction of the companies I send it to before I "burn" myself, so far - I received no response, not even a no... :(
I understand that CVs are different in the states than the style we use here, perhaps my CV is all wrong?
Is there any "professional CV writer" who could take a look at my CV and tell me if I didn't "Americanize" it enough?

Thanks.

Lessee. at about $750 a year, the cost of your next 4003 could keep junior dry for about 2-1/2 years, I guess.
