Bump in the jackplate area in my 370/12?

Post by miguel »

I´m used to the body shape of my 330/6, but the 360 bodystyle is new to me. Until now that I have got a 370/12, I had only seen this kind of guitar in the books. So here is my answer. I have noticed that my brand new 370/12 has a bump in the area of the jackplate. Mind you, it is not a finish fault or something, it is a bump in the wood! I love the guitar anyway, but I would like to know if this detail is part of the shape or the guitar or is something rare. Thanks! (P.S: wish I could post a picture, but I don´t have the right camera).

I think I know the "bump" you're talking about, Miguel, and yes, it is supposed to be there. Take a look at the cover of your manual (assuming one came with the guitar). In that photo, you'll see a distinct change in the line of the guitar around the jackplate area. The rounded edge of the guitar disappears, becoming a more conventional ninety-degree angle. I've always assumed this was done so that the jackplate could be mounted flush against the side of the guitar. Similar angles are used on either side of the body near the neck, although the visual effect isn't as pronounced.

John: Thank you very much. When I found out the bump, it was a surprise to me. As I told you, I have been looking at pictures of many 360 and 370 models for long years, but I have never noticed the bump. You have described it perfectly: it is exactly as you say. Thanks again!
