What Am I?

Post by lyle_from_minneapolis »

Here's a rocker in progress, just tracked the vocals and tossed it online for critique. All crits and comments most welcome!

What Am I

What am I to you
A voodoo doll
A cushion for your pins
What am I to you
A place to fall
When the bottle gives you the spins

Well I know just what you are
You're my bright and shining star
You're the strings of my guitar
Yes I know what you are

But what am I
To you
Somebody to love
Or just something to do
What am I to you

What am I to you
A face and a name
A place to lay your head
What am I to you
Just the same old flame
Who decorates your bed

Well I know just what you are
You're so close and yet so far
You're lightning in a jar
Yes I know what you are

But what am I
To you
Somebody to love
Or just something to do
What am I
To you
Would you call it love
Can you make it true
What am I to you

What am I to you
Am I a chicken bone
A little fast food from Kentucky?
What am I to you
Some kind of Blarney Stone
That you kiss when you ain't lucky?

Well I know just what you are
Such a bright and shining star
You're what shakes up my guitar
Yes I see what you are

But what am I
To you
Somebody to love
Or just something to do
What am I
To you
Would you call it love
Can you make it true
What am I to you

I'm having a little trouble with that line. Kinda looks like you were reachin' here Mark.

Good call, Jim. Maybe "warmin' up your bed" or something along that line...

Thanks! Truly appreciated.

Good song. Seems to have a trebley sound to it.

Excellent, Mark!

I love it. I'm hearing Joe Walsh, Ringo, David Bowie, Little Feat, all my favorite glam-era bands melded into one. What great fun for you that must have been. Sorry I missed the first version. Maybe the words could use a little more growing into but, hey, it's not that kind of song to be too hung up on the words in the verse, cause you'll never remember them after that hooky-butt chorus gets into your brain

Now I'll be reminded that old smart-aleck expression for days

Nice that you're posting the intermediate mixes. I wanted to do that but I get so caught up now until the song is finished.

Anything unusual, gear-wise on this one?

Thanks Kris! Hopefully I fixed that...that last mix was horrid. Still struggling with the whole engineering thing. I always wanted to be a Beatle, but nowadays we also have to be Geoff Emerick...

Thanks, Ms. Moon!

I may change up some of those lyrics...the "are" rhymes could be different, maybe some change ups from all the "what am I"s in the verses. Let's see...gear-wise:

SM-58
'57 Stratocaster reissue
'72 Rickenbacker 4001
EZ Drummer
Alvarez Yairi acoustic
Two VST plugins from Cubase: Organ and Piano
Chandler Abbey Road 1969 compressor
Vox ad50vt amp

and that's about it. Thanks Kira!

Now it's off with me to the Oxford English Dictionary to look up "hooky-butt"...
