So I got this 59 950 a little while back, and could never find the serial number. Then I take it to MARF and Simmons and Williams spot it right away! It was right there on the bridge baseplate where it's supposed to be, just so worn it doesn't jump right out at you at first glance. Thanks to them for finding it for me.
Now the tricky part. I know very little of the pre-60's serial numbers. It looks like:
V9
547
But there is a little slash through the "V" and it actually looks like it is an upside down "A." If that's the case, and you read the first line upside down, I suppose it could be A6 547. I'm confused. So, what's my serial and when does it date to? Thanks, J
PS it won't show up in pics... I'll have to wait for good sunlight.
What's my serial? ('59 950 FG)

Could it be C9547? Just thinking Combo 950? A9547 would make it a 61?
Re: What's my serial? ('59 950 FG)
It's definitely V9 or A6. And all the expert opinions I've gathered point to it being a '59. Flatbacks, fireglo, 3way rotary switch.

The reason I said what I did about the number being 'V9' xxx can be found in the back of the Smith book IIRC. I don't have it in front of me at the moment, but I think the particular model were talking about (tulip 900, 950) may have used this arrangement at the time.....
The stamping is pretty light on the plate, too....harder to see from the oxidation of the bare metal.

With the book in front me, John is exactly right. The V was for the 900's and 1000's, and occasionally the 950

So did they use upside down "A" stamps for the letter "V"? I suppose anything is possible on any given day back then, or it might be a highly unlikely but entirely possible scratch in just the rigth spot, perfectly straight.
