It is unknown, according to "Beatles Gear". I'd go with Thomastik-Infield 12 gauge strings.

Definitely flatwounds. He most likely used an unwound 'B' string in place of the wound 'G,' as was common in those days. I use D'Addario Chromes in .13 gauge on my Miami, but if you want to be as accurate as possible I agree that TI flats in .12 are probably your best bet.

None, it's the brand name.

Chromes is the trade name for D'Addario's flatwound strings.

Why did they do that?

Not speaking for anyone, but Clapton mentions moving the B up to the G, the E up to the B, and using a single Banjo string for a high E so that they'd be easier to play lead with.

String bendability in the days before sets with unwound 'G' strings became common.

Pete Townshend used this string configuration with his Fender Telecasters and Stratocasters from 1967-1968:

.012
.016
.016p (substituted for .026w)
.034
.044
.052

For his Gibson SGs and Les Pauls (1968-1979), he used this configuration:

.012
.016
.016
.032
.044
.056

This is not off topic as I AM discussing a British musician who used heavy gauge strings with a light G-string
