This man is your FRIEND

Post by jdogric12 »

I snagged this at work while we were cleaning out part of the office... I did some googling and it's a reprint of a WWII poster, part of a series created to educate Americans about our allies during the war. Then, so few Americans had traveled abroad (even less than now!) so they had to educate a little. Neat, huh? Funny thing is, there is a sticker on the back that says "Property of the Australian government."

OMG, possession of stolen property! You better send that back to Oz or they'll be coming after you!

Those WWII training things are pretty fun, I used to have some my granddad had around (he was an army officer during the war). Wish I still had 'em.
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I have made a note of this....

On a serious note though I can understand why there was a need for this. During the war the were many incidents in Australia, some involving shooting. An alledged incident that was covered up involved a regiment of Australian soldiers on a train that pulled into a station full of G.I.s. Words were exchanged followed by gunfire.
Look up the Battle of Brisbane http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Brisbane

My father used to tell me stories of the U.S. troops that stationed here during the '39-'45 war.
"Overpaid, over-*****, and over here!!"
A favorite taunt by the Australian troops relaxing in the city cinemas was to yell out to the U.S. boys.....
"drinks, lollies, chocolates and Purple hearts!" Apparently that started quite a few fights.

LOL!! Well, at least it wasn't all brawling with each other :D : there was an American cruiser Canberra named in honor of the HMAS Canberra, an Australian cruiser lost during the battle of Savo Island in 1942: http://www.usscanberra.com/shiphistory.htm
