Richard Petty? (Just kiddin'...) I agree with you and Tom completely, shamustwin. Ringo and Charlie Watts are the reasons I pestered my parents for years for a drum kit...they finally gave in to spare the dining room table's finish from my relentless 'silverware work' at mealtimes...

I just heard the Stones' "*****" for the first time in years at a neighborhood place 'me julie' took me to for my birthday lunch. Holy moley! They could calibrate the atomic clock in Boulder to that drum track...

I'm a big fan of Ringo's drumming (not so his singing), but having said that I've noticed that a lot of his live stuff was much cruder than the studio recordings. I guess this is understandable given the wild screaming where the Fabs were struggling just to hear themselves.... Ringo was just trying to give them some sort of audible beat to go by.

Right, they had no monitors, and screaming 747 level fans. Ringo said live, he was hesitant to do fills, they'd get lost in the din and the band might lose it's place.

Ringo only wrote two songs while with the Beatles: Don't Pass Me By for the White album, and Octopus' Garden for Abbey Road. Even as a single artist, Ringo didn't write many songs. His three standout albums (IMO) were: Ringo (1973), Old Wave (1983), and I Wanna Be Santa Claus (1999). On Ringo, he co-wrote two of the songs, and wrote one. On Old Wave, he co-wrote five songs. On IWBSC, he also co-wrote five songs. And on each of his other solo albums. he either wrote or co-wrote one to five songs per album (most of these were co-written with other artists).

I Wanna Be Santa Claus is one of my favorite Ringo albums. Ringo is one of my favorite of all the Beatles solo albums, too
