I'm just not a big Who fan but "Pictures of Lily" is a great song. I think Townsend's best work by far is All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. Quadraphenia works pretty well as both a concept album and movie. But I think the only thing worse than the album Tommy was the movie version.

Their version of "Batman" makes me cringe. Aside from the usual suspects, "Run Run Run" and "Doctor Please" are often overlooked. "Call me Lightning" has a great reverbed out bass solo, and the fuzz laden guitar solo on "Our Love Was/Is" is amongst the best both in tone and execution. There are many gems of theirs that are often overlooked,IMHO.

I'm obviously in the minority but I love these 2 albums. Emenince Front is absolutely incredible.

+1 on that. These albums are often overlooked, but contain some great songs, and some floaters, just like every one of their albums(or anybodys for that matter).

I saw them post Moon and thought they were phenomonal!

I think the great humor of The Who is sometimes overlooked. Squeeze Box has clever lyrics and is obviously just a fun song. The banjo gives it a light feeling. Many others like Boris the Spider are just clever and fun and some have evolved as musical statements, although they probably weren't meant to be.

Pictures of Lily probably ranks as my favorite with its key changes and power chords that were really something to hear when it first came out.

Can't Explain is on every compilation of hits I have on my pods.

Best,

The version of "A Quick One" from Rolling Stones Rock'n'Roll Circus is just about my favorite song of all time.

+1 for Quadrophenia and Live at Leeds (the single LP version)

Conversely, "Fiddle About" may be the worst, but the Who have many songs that make me cringe...
