Bass identification

It's John Hall's voice on the corporate phone message, by the way. If any of you are familiar with aviation history, Eddie Rickenbacker, the famous American Indy car drive, WWI ace, Medal of Honor awardee, and later president of Eastern Airlines, was actually a cousin (2nd?) of Adolf Rickenbacker. At various times, different branches of the family changed the spelling of the family name (and with it, likely the pronunciation) from Rickenbacher to Rickenbacker to appear less Germanic as the Germans were the bad guys during much of the first half of the 20th Century. Most archives of sound newsreels dealing with Eddie pronounce it "RICKenbacker," with, as Paul W. stated, a slight accent on the first syllable (RICK).

Actually, John's comments on this matter were more in the nature of addressing the issue of BACK vs. BOCK in the pronunciation, not where to place the accent. So, BOCK is not "close enough". It's wrong, is the point. And, if you listen to the phone message on the factory's voice mail, you will hear, "Thank you for calling Rickenbacker..." with a faint emphasis on the first syllable.

As JH says, "if Rickenbacker was good enough for Adolph, it should be good enough for us."

Ahh, I took the capitalization as a designation of syllabic emphasis, not pronunciation.

I always pronounced it RICKenbacker, not RickenBACKer, which I now know is...well...maybe correct.

I admire her effort. The SWR sounded great and the autowah was neat, not my thing, but worked for her and worked with the "spanking". Good job Amy. I could do without the distortion but I have a feeling it goes well with your live sound.

Haha! You guys crack me up! Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, and for your comments. Only on a bass forum could a thread go from bass ID to company pronunciation! Funny thing is, I'm a linguist by training, but my degrees are in French and Russian, so this is out of my area of expertise. Besides, out here in the middle of rural Missouri, you don't hear it pronounced much; in fact, most people see "bass" and think I'm talking about fish! Oh, well, the important thing is the was the BASS sounds, not the company name, right?!

I love your tone Amy and the way you manipulate your signal to fill out your sound for live gigs. I'm a fingernail player too, it suits the rick overtones very well. I know your a Rush fan and i think it goes back to our influences since Geddy gets a little nail in his sound too. Just listen to the beginning of Jacobs Ladder, all fingernail there at the beginning.

As much as I like watching Amy's parts, Joe's Drum Corner intrigues me as well. It's interesting hearing him explain how he came about with beats and how they mesh with the bass groove.

Amy, I like your style. Hell, I'm thinking of putting on fake nails to emulate it moreso. That and it'd definitely help with the 5 string plucking I'm trying to do.

I too have trouble remembering BACK and many other Americanisms after adjusting to international usage in the time I lived in Europe. It annoys the heck out of some people. but I don't do it on purpose
