Gibson Discoverer

Post by jimk »

This is for sale at the local guitar shop. I'm thinking very seriously about buying it. Price is in my range, and it seems like a nice little low power amp. Plugged in my Rick and played it this afternoon. Anyone have one of these?

If you like it, it's easy to tote around and you think it sounds good with your Ric, two words for ya: BUY IT

Yeah, sometimes they disappear. It may have something to do with copyright, I don't know. Anyway, here's the link.

If you like it, and have the money for it, why not. Looks like a cool piece, but I would think that price would be at the top of the scale for what it's worth. Being out of the biz for a bit, I could be way off, but $400 sounds at the high end of fair. I got my great condition JC-120 for less than that a couple of years ago, and I've seen JC 77 and 90 amps on Ebay for quite a bit less. Vox makes some great amps in the under $400 range. I just got an AC4TV for $259 that is really a fun, cool little tone monster.

The Gibson does look cool though :D

I'd consider that a premium price would be acceptable if the amp is good, because Jim lives in an area where gear offerings may be less than plentiful. A jog downtown is a far sight more convenient than an online adventure, or a trek across state. That said, I'd be careful not to get gouged too. I think JimK did pretty well if he's happy with the result.

I already have a big, huge, loud, solid state amp. So this little Gibson at 15w. or so looks pretty attractive for home use, jams, etc. I've done business with the shop ever since moving to Lawrence, and I think they'll bargain. I might start by offering say $275 and see what they say.

I had a Gibson "Skylark" back in the early '60s, when these amps were made. It was Gibson's version of the Fender Princeton, and a fine little amp it was, too. It was better-built than the Fender product, and was a nice, clean little guy with more headroom than the Fender, too.

This Discoverer amp (IMO) is not worth more than the $275.00 you're thinking, Jim.

Here's the news.
1. It's on consignment. So that means there isn't a whole lot of room for bargaining. I spoke to the managing partner and he said the best he could do as a good buddy deal for a loyal customer (me) was $365.00, thus lowering the store's take from the usual 25% to 20%.

2. I looked in the back, and it has a 12" Jensen speaker. Aren't those supposed to be pretty good? Sounds familiar....like as in Fender familiar.

It really is a sweet little amp, nice for living room playing, small gigs, informal jams; shoot, even front porch picking without the neighbors calling the cops for excessive noise ordnance violation. Run my Rick and Jangle Box through it, and I expect it might speak right out.

I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this deal....

I know the feeling. I'm used to paying a little extra for convenience, but I don't want to be fooled either. A better deal can always be found but how much is your time worth? This is a bird in the hand. Is it worth it to just be able to get on with it? Or if you have no pressing need, bide your time and find that real bargain.

If you like it, opinions on money are irrelevant. These Gibs are lovely amps and very well-built.

Good thing for me that my "convenient" dealer in town is having a depression sale. Or maybe not ...

I'm still on the fence about this thing. Other amps on my short list are
  • Vox AC15
    Fender Blues Jr.
    Traynor YCV20WR
Another one that might be worth looking at is the Laney LC15R

Nice thing about these amps is that they all have reverb and tremolo settings, the Gibson doesn't.
