In praise: bitsa '58 Duo-Sonic - NICE PICS!!

Post by kiramdear »

Sorry if you've seen this one in another section, but I thought it needed to take its place here in the Curmudgeon's book of dreams.

I'm now the proud owner of this "bitsa" 1958 Fender Duo-Sonic, a recent creation from Paul's workshop. First some pics:

Assembled from vintage and new Duo parts and sporting a new gold pickguard, this one takes its visual cues from Ry Cooder's very own '58 Duo, right down to the custom Desert Sand finish. A Nineties' body was meticulously contoured to 1958 specs and given a finish that is finer than anything I've ever seen off the rack (even a Rick! imvho) Enough reading. More pics:

But here is the heart of our re-creation - a real '58 Duo bridge tail:

You can believe I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself about this. :D

Me LIKE! And I don't even know what to do with a guitar!
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

You should see this, Jeff. The finish and the pickguard are still flawless. As much as I want to avoid dinging it up, I can't keep my hands off it. Oh well, enjoy it while you can, I tell myself  and get lots more good pics real soon!

Nice Kira! I love those old Desert Sand/Gold aly. combos.

It looks like an NOS Duo-Sonic, nice one Paul.

Rick-style CV lacquered body. Amber nitro finished neck. Complete refret, vintage style. Faux stripe and plug. Spaghetti decal.

It came with just the right old brown Fender case too. He thought of everything.

This guitar looks like NOS that Fender wish they made on their best day ever.

Great photos, Kira. My first electric guitar was a 1962 Duo Sonic. I am sure you must be enjoying your latest acquisition.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I should comment on the tone of this guitar by saying the body is highly resonant, giving it a snappy, sassy, brash acoustic tone. Just like its new owner  No surprises when you plug it in, the works are typical Fender. One upgrade to consider would be the installation of some cherry-picked substitutes to tailor my sound one way or another when I get the urge. Other than that, this is one of those perfect designs that pretty much defies any other mods I might consider. I can respect that. 8)

Yeah, I guess that's how I would put it. It's a different flavor of Fender. Part of that difference is the scale length, I believe. Boy, for being so little and pretty, it looks big and nasty when you crank it up  8)
