Gibson news (Raw Power)

I fnd Gibson overrated. The SG Classic (with P-90s) and the J-200 are two of my favorite guitars (can anyone guess why?), but other than that, I do not think much of Gibson.

Pete is cool and all, but I don't get your obsession with only liking what he used. Just cause he touched it doesn't make it golden and everything else Gibson has ever done ****. I mean come on, think for yourself a little.

It's really not such a hard conclusion for one to come to Jake, especially the "overrated" bit, and "other than that, I do not think much of Gibson" ending you put on your post. You shouldn't be so surprised that people react to your statements the way that they do, when they have such an "absolute" tone to them. This same tone easily translates in to you being only interested in your heroes instruments, and all others fall short of the mark. Whether or not this is the truth, only you know, but it is very easy for others to come to this conclusion.

The necks remind me of Tuxedo Ricks. I thought the title may have been a tribute to Iggy and the Stooges album "Raw Power" which featured some of the most insane guitar shrapnel ever committed to tape. A Les Paul, several Marshall stacks, and way too much intravenous inspiration created a sonic attack in the war zones of sanity. Outstanding album, IMHO.

Raw Power is one of my all time favorites and I think Williamson's guitar playing and writing fueled that version of the band. That was the pinnacle of rock n roll to me. Williamson inspired many guitarists and I bet most of them don't know it.
As far as Gibson quality goes I bought a new Gibson Thunderbird a few years ago and it is a great bass, well made and sounds and plays good.

Whatever I said about Gibson, I take back. Today at International Vintage Guitars, I played a '06 Les Paul Standard, and it was FANTASTIC. That thing can not only sing the blues, but can growl out the '64-'74 Keith Richards tones, too. Amazing guitar, I'll say (again).

Not only did I enjoy that particular LP Standard as well as the obvious SG Classic and J-200, but I also like SG Standards (ala Angus Young/George Harrison), Les Paul Deluxes, Freibirds, the ES-345 stereo, the ES-175, the J-160E acoustic and even the Thunderbird bass (the 60's models are my favorite variations!). Perhaps my words were too strong about Gibson, they are a good company and are just doing what they're doing to get around for money...isn't that what ANYONE would do???

Well, I can think of one guitar maker who does things a little differently and still is thriving, namely our dear USA made RIC. But the Gibson classic models are a joy to experience or own. Three generations of rockers can't be wrong now, can they?

The only reason I would ever even buy a Gibson would be to get a decent mahogany instrument. I would not go for one made out of maple--that's Ric's thang. Like Ric instruments, the "original formula" for Gibsons gave them a unique sound unlike the other bread and butter stuff and set them apart. It doesn't seem wise to get away from that.

I pretty much only play 50s Gibsons. As for modern Gibson's QC, I think they're as good as anyone's. I've seen horrors from EVERY manufacturer. Even the boutiques. We all dig Rickenbackers, but they let dogs slide through as well. Gretsch had the famous "Gertsch" guitar slide through during their "golden" age.
As for playing guitars of our heroes, I quite enjoy the guitars that Jonathan Sipes plays. His playing relaxes me. I play the models that he plays.

I don't like this mentality. It's dangerous.

What if the Beatles had stuck with their early Beat-music sound because it's what made them famous and set them apart?

I think constantly pushing the bar is a great quality. The results may not always be spectacular, and you'll probably fall flat on your face several times, but eventually you'll stumble upon something wonderful that you would never have achieved had you decided to stay in the box.
