RM plays for friends in Chicago on 5/15

Post by Janglyman »

We saw RM on Friday, 5/15 at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. It was one of the best RM shows in years. It was a very small theater of a few hundred old folkies and Byrd fans. The audience was very warm and receptive and knew all the folk references RM likes to make. The show was the same as the one I saw in March, which is basically a musical history/journey from the '50's to the present. Not a lot of post-Byrds stuff, (and no 5D) except for "The Trees Are All Gone." Eight Miles High was the finale, played on the 7 string Martin acoustic. The audience was roaring, and RM threw in a lick from the James Bond Theme (very cool). We gave him a standing O, which he really appreciated. During the encore, he encouraged cell phone pix, and at one point he pulled out HIS I-phone and took a picture of the audience! ( I hope it makes the blog).

He was in exceptional voice, and his playing was excellent. There was a lot of singing along by the audience, highlighted by the audience backing vocals on I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better. Roger seemed genuinely at ease and among friends and in a very good mood. He even cracked a few unscripted one liners.

Not as much Rick as I would personally like, but no wireless problems and the sound system was fabulous. Camilla was cordial, but firm, ie, no pix, free autographs, etc.

I will now open the floor for questions.
