I've always thought Tim Davis from the Steve Miller Band, was very metaphorically creative and insightful with
"Your Saving Grace" from 1969

Winter's people watching
As I sail from season's four
To join some crazy ladies
In a game upon the shore
None of them with broken wings
But still refuse to fly
So with sweetness on my lips
I smile a last goodbye

And now I spend my life
On the velvet side of hell
Aimlessly here searching
For what I cannot tell
The quietness is terrible
It's more than I can stand
But thousands now stand cheering
As my blood flows in the sand

Spoken:
You're not the child You thought you were
You wake up in the night
And know you're blind
And yet they keep on pushing
Trying the insides of your mind

Forever, forever arresting to control
Until the emptiness of heaven welcomes your weary soul

Rise up with the new dawn's early morning
Feel the sunshine warm upon your face
Tomorrow's come a long, long way to help you
Yes, it's your saving grace

Every day, every way
Tomorrow, it's your saving grace

Well, now got no time to worry
Cause I've got no time to hurry
Baby, it's your saving grace

Now don't you lay those blames on me
Don't you play those games on me
Cause baby it's your saving grace

You got to need a little lovin'
Now baby it's your saving grace

Hey, I feel alright
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Your saving grace

Ah, hey, hey, hey
Your saving grace
La la la la la la la la....
Oh baby, it's your saving grace

I love all the early Steve Miller Band stuff, Your Saving Grace is a stand out. I have all their early albums, gotta pull them out and play them. I used to play Brave New World every spring. Maybe not the greatest lyrics in the world but a soul inspiring song all the same.

We're driving fast
From a dream of the past
To the brave new world
Where nothing will last
That comes from the past
It's a brave new world
Put a smile on your face
As we walk with space
In the brave new world
Now as you begin
You're born once again
With the rising sun

Something new, nothing old
Something true, something gold
No spirit of the past
Can hold you back
From the brave new world

The direction to start
Is inside your heart
To the brave new world
If you're free in your heart
You can make a new start
It's a brave new world
There's nothing to hide
Leave your troubles behind
It's a brave new world
I told you, my friend
And I'll tell you again
Your trip has begun

Something new, nothing old
Something true, something gold
The direction to start
Is inside your heart
To the brave new world

Quite a coincidence, I heard it the day after mentioning it here on Deep tracks, XM satellite. Don't think I've ever heard it on the radio before.

"I'm cut in half pretty bad, Dewy...""

- Dewy's brother, whom Dewy had just cut in half with a machete. (from the movie "Walk Hard - The Dewy Cox Story"

OK, not a song lyric, but one funny rock and roll movie.

Los Lobos...

A wise man was telling stories to me
about the places he had been to and the things that he had seen

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave and this land here of the free,
One time one night in America

A lady dressed in white with the man she loves
Standing along the side of their pick up truck
A shot rang out in the night
Just when everything seemed right
Another headline written down in America

The guy that lived next door in three oh five
took the kids to the park and disappeared 'bout half past nine
Who will ever know how much she loved them so
That dark night alone in America

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave and this land here of the free,
One time one night in America

Four small boys playing ball in the parking lot
A preacher, a teacher, and the other became a cop
A car skidded into the rain
Making the last little one a saint
One more light goes out in America

A young girl tosses a coin in the wishing well
She hopes for a heaven while for her there's just this hell
She gave away her life to become somebody's wife
Another wish unanswered in America

People having so much faith
Die too soon while all the rest come late
We write a song that no one sings
On a cold black stone where a lasting peace will finally bring

The sunlight plays upon my window pane
I wake up to a world that's still the same
My father said to be strong
That a good man could never do wrong
In a dream I had last night in America

A wise man was telling stories to me
about the places he had been to and the things that he had seen

A quiet voice is singing something to me
An age old song 'bout the home of the brave and this land here of the free,
One time one night in America

One time one night in America
One time one night in America

Tim Buckley...

You don't remember what to say
You don't remember what to do
You don't remember where to go
You don't remember what to choose
You wheel, you steal, you feel, you kneel down

All the stony people
Walking 'round in Christian licorice clothes
I can't hesitate
And I can't wait
For Pleasant Street

The sunshine reminds you of concreted skies
You thought you were flying but you opened your eyes
And you found yourself falling back to yesterday's lies
Hello, Pleasant Street, you know she's back again
You wheel, you steal, you feel, you kneel down

All the stony people
Walking 'round in Christian licorice clothes
I can't hesitate
And I can't wait
For Pleasant Street

At twilight your lover comes to your room
He'll spin you, he'll weave you 'round his emerald loom
And softly you'll whisper all around his ear
"Sweet lover, I love Pleasant Street
I wheel, I steal, I feel my way down to kneel"

All the stony people
Walking 'round in Christian licorice clothes
I can't hesitate
And I can't wait
For Pleasant Street

You don't remember what to say
You don't remember what to do
You don't remember which way to go
You don't remember who to choose
You wheel, you steal, you feel, you kneel down

Chuck...
Up in the mornin' and out to school
The teacher is teachin' the Golden Rule
American history and practical math
You studyin' hard and hopin' to pass
Workin' your fingers right down to the bone
And the guy behind you won't leave you alone

Ring, ring goes the bell
The cook in the lunch room's ready to sell
You're lucky if you can find a seat
You're fortunate if you have time to eat
Back in the classroom, open your books
Keep up the teacher don't know how mean she looks

Soon as three o'clock rolls around
You finally lay your burden down
Close up your books, get out of your seat
Down the halls and into the street
Up to the corner and 'round the bend
Right to the juke joint, you go in

Drop the coin right into the slot
You're gotta hear somethin' that's really hot
With the one you love, you're makin' romance
All day long you been wantin' to dance,
Feeling the music from head to toe
Round and round and round we go

Hail, hail rock and roll
Deliver me from the days of old
Long live rock and roll
The beat of the drums, loud and bold
Rock, rock, rock and roll
The feelin' is there, body and soul.
