I recall the day vividly...I was a newlywed, watching the whole thing in our new apartment in Chicago on a wedding-gift color TV set.
As an aside: Some Brasilians of my generation were so inspired, that they named their kids born in that era after these astronauts.
Not the astronauts' first names, their last! So there are a fair number of people running around Brasil with names like "Aldrin Sequerra" or "Collins Fonseca". I did meet a guy who had all three buttoned up, though: "Armstrong Collins Aldrin Da Silva". He was a cabbie in Rio.
