Actually, the mods traditionally wore continental suits, often referred to as "italian cut" or "carnaby suits".
Zoot suits usually had shoulder pads, wide lapels, and pleated pants....all things, traditionally, most un-mod/modern.
Yeah, and specifically they were an Italian style called the "box cut" with a very short coat often referred to as a "bumfreezer" jacket.
This was, of course, only one (the most popular) mod style back then. Pete Meaden referring to it as a "Zoot Suit" in the song of the same title was an incorrect slang that never truly caught on.
