PRS Custom 22

My good friend Ron Viney came over yesterday for a bit of 'show and tell' and the obligatory jam. One of the guitars he brought with him was his PRS Custom 22 Top 10:

I had played the guitar briefly some time ago but never plugged in so I gave it a bit of a workout.

WOWEE!!

The neck has an incredible 'feel' to it and plays like butter.... beautiful!! It's an '02 build and has a Dragon II humbucker at the neck and a Seymour Duncan one at the bridge.... I think in those days the SD was optional. I like the simplicity of the controls - master volume, master tone and 3 way selector... nothing fancy but it provides incredible tonal variation. And these pups are hot when cranked up to the max!!

Needless to say it doesn't belong to Ron any more.....

Mind you, I haven't paid him for it yet but meh....... details.

Anybody else out there got one of these PRS Custom jobbies?

I don't know much about them, says it is one of the "good ones" before someone took over PRS.

There's a guy in a band here who has a PRS 12 string. It is amazing as well. Plays like a well set up Tom Petty (660/12).

The range of tones he gets is also a Wow factor.

Stunningly beautiful!

I just stuck my toe in the PRS pond for the first time, with one of their entry-level imports--an SE Singlecut Soabar.

Quality-wise, this is one of the nicest mid-priced import guitars I've played, and I've played quite a few examples from different makers, including the usual suspects--Fender, Epi, etc.. And buying used, I got this guitar for what a lot of entry-price level guitars go for.

Of course, she doesn't have the jaw-dropping beauty of their higher end domestic stuff like your new guitar, but she plays wonderfully and sounds really good.

Not in a position at the moment to sample the big leagues, but I've gotta admit my interest is piqued.

There is a twelve string version of the Custom 22. EverythingI heard about it was enthusiastic. Two humbuckers and a Lindy Fralin single coil in middle, wide slim neck, 12 saddle bridge. Anybody tried that out ?

I've got the '06 Custom 24 below.

GREAT guitar...It gets played out more than any of my other guitars. Because of the 24 frets and the associated pickup location, it It won't get quite as "dark" as a CU-22 but the standard pickups are a little hotter, which makes up for it. I've also played a PRS Hollowbody, which was very nice. The Piezo was amazing, the pickups didn't quite have enough "ummph" for me to use it much...I was still tempted.

While it's not the only guitar on the planet that has a wide tonal palette, the Custom 24 does have a wide variety of tones as you can see....and hear below....

I have a early 93 custom 24 that I got from "Sounds Great" on Herald Green whan I was over in the UK all those years ago.
Never try to compare a PRS to any other brand. As Rickenbackers are a law unto themselves, so is PRS...
I just got mine out of hiding for the first time in years recently. It is so silly easy to play that it turns me into a lazy player real fast! The guitar seems to do the work for you...

Thanks for posting the clip, John. I'm thinking that the modern 5 position switch gives more variation than the 3 way switch on mine... or is it still Ron's? Possession is 9/10ths and all that.........

I think it's the wide slim neck that won me in the end..... playability plus! Although I did get lost at one stage when I shot up to the 12th fret expecting to find two dots. After that I had to keep telling myself "go to the big bird!"

Huh? When did that happen? AFAIK, PRS himself is still very much at the helm....

Or is this a premonition?

Yeah, not sure what that's about . Mr. PRS is still running PRS...I'm guessing there's some "urban legend" kind of stuff going on here over pre-lawsuit and post-lawsuit guitars---which of course is in itself pretty silly, since PRS never altered their methods--only their production for a short period of time.

There is a pre factory vs post factory fable about the instruments otherwise known as pre 94 and post 94.
I hate to say it but its possible there may be some truth in it..
