Well, I did find a Höfner, only it wasn't under the bed, it was in a closet. And, it could have been his except the pickups are not like that one. And, it looks to be a bit newer, too. Oh well, I love it just the same. :D

I heard his original Hofner was stolen during the LIB sessions. The black metal pickup surround was installed to keeo the pickupos from popping out, The pickguard was cut to accomidate the new configuration.

That's the impression I've always had.

This first Hofner was no doubt used on the "Revolution" single. That foam thing under the bridge was to mute the strings.

"McCartney had arranged for extensive work to be done to his original '61 Hofner bass while he was away on tour. The guitar was refinished with a polyurethane sunburst finish, similar in appearance to Fender's well known three-color sunburst. His old Hofner was also fitted with a new mounting system afor the two forward pickups, one of which had come loose and had been temporarily taped in place. Replacing the regular individua pickup surrounds, a new large black rectaungular plate was made hold the two Hofner pickups in place. The bass's pickguard was cut to accommodate the new mounting plate, and new set of volume knobs replaced the originals."
