Danelectro Classic Baritone
I found one of these for sale at a good price in my local shop. I was hoping to get some comments from our tonemeisters before I pull the trigger. It's in good shape and the fellow is going to give it a setup before I come back on Tuesday.
Does anyone have experience with this model? I'd like to hear your comments.
It's just like the one in this picture, same Commie Red finish:

Me gusto mucho.
Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
Glad to hear it, Kenny. It's used but in great condition, barely played it seems, and he has a case of some kind for it. Do you think it's worth $250?
I found this cheesy demo, meantime:

Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
My local dealer had the same Dano baritone in the store a few years ago. I was going to buy it, but I waited too long and foun out that it was eventually sold. Here's a baritone that I've been lusting after for a little while: http://www.classicaxe.com/product_detail.php?id=446

Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
I had one and it was a sonic wonder.
Just check that the neck joint is solid as they have screws in all the places apart from where you need them (I had to add an extra in mine)
The bridge only sort of works and tends to collapse in the middle leaving a funny action.
A good shaped neck with great pickups though.
It was a guitar that I loved to hate!
Worth the money but check it out carefully...
Eden.

Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
Eden, thanks for the tips. That's exactly what I wanted to know. This one's in great shape and the neck is nice, as you say. Even for a wimp like me. I'll inspect those points carefully and see how the action is after the man has finished the setup. If I'm happy I might manage it for Christmas. One thing I can't say is that I've already got anything like it - it is a whole nuther animal.
Ron, that PRS looks pretty formidable, too. I hope you find a good one.

Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
kira, this model falls into a very special sonic region. i have had very little experience with any six string bass, like the fender bass john lennon used, but i can say i think these korean made dano's from a few years back were reasonably well made. i have a hodad bass that i love,my luthier had to tweak and shim it a bit,but it plays and sounds great. at some point,i want to have the control cavity shielded and the pots upgraded, the vol and tone are pretty much "on/off".... i think that's a really good price too, actually, and commie red is relatively hard to find-seems they made a ton of the black ones. i would go for it!
edit+ ok this isn't actually a bass,i realize--hence the "special" comment above,it's a unique thing unto itself,my only caveat would be the longer scale,as your collection if i remember correctly is shorter scale guitars.

Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
Yes, I do love my short scale ricks and fenders, but I'm comfortable with anything from mandolin to bass as they are all "unique unto themselves". My scale issue is really about string tension and strength rather than length between frets, and because I like to play heavier strings on guitar I prefer a shorter one. But that's one of the things I have to find out after the setup, is whether I can actually chord the thing comfortably. Of course, there are different tunings and string gauges to consider, too, that will help with the tension issues, if any.woodyng wrote: edit+ ok this isn't actually a bass,i realize--hence the "special" comment above,it's a unique thing unto itself,my only caveat would be the longer scale,as your collection if i remember correctly is shorter scale guitars.

Yeah, man, I love it! It makes me want to shake something. The twelve string solo in there ain't bad either.

Re: Danelectro Classic Baritone
$250 for that sound seems like a steal to me. Reissue Danos of that era have particularly nice necks...
Think I'll go listen to some Mermen now

I saw the Beach Boys playing Good Vibrations on Ed Sullivan yesterday, and Brian was playing the bass part on a Tele. Pretty unexpected.collin wrote:My favorite baritone guitar riff:

As for the Dano, I would definitely pull the trigger!
Great Ramp In My Opinion.

I always thought that they mimed in those days......so it wouldn't matter what he was playing.
