Guitar shops in NYC.

Post by fireglo67 »

My cousin will be in New York for the first time in January, and he wants to buy a guitar while he is there.
IAny recommendations as to where to go/ones to avoid?

Cheers.

Rob.

BTW, he's not a rickenbacker player, he wants a Gibson custom shop Les Paul in Alpine White. ( I know, I know)

I'm sure our New Yawkers will chime in, but when I was there, I did the requisite touristy visit to 48th st. Rudy's has great pieces but also has Manhattan prices :( and then there is Sam Ash, yawn. Try to get down to Matt Umanov's, that's a cool place from what I could gather on my last quick visit.

Well...for vintage guitars my favorites are Main Drag Music in Brooklyn & 30th Street Guitars in Manhattan.

As for where one may find a Gibson custom shop Les Paul in Alpine White...maybe Guitar Center?

PS I'll be in England in May. Do you know which shops might have a 1999?

Rudy's is the most interesting of the bunch. Sam Ash at Manny's. GC on W. 14th. A lot of interesting smaller shops for the locals.
Guitars shipped out of NY pay no sales tax.
