Roger Glover w 4001 in Montreux '71

Post by FretlessOnly »

Here's a picture from the '71 recording sessions for Machine Head. Note the Sgt. Pepper's patch on his left jacket sleeve 8) :

Now that I have your attention regarding Mr. Glover, who I feel is a largely underrated bassist, does anyone have any info on whether he had two Ricks or just the one? Many of use have heard about the dual pickup mod he had done in '74 - see here:

http://www.dawksound.com/bass.html

Clearly a Fireglo, but every photo I've seen (granted most all are in b/w) and the '73 viddy I have from Hofstra U. (which is in color) seems to clearly show a Jetglo. Hmmm.
Can we have everything louder than everything else?

i always assumed it was a jetglo as the pics in the inside sleeve of machinehead lp do not show any finish variation. looks solid colour so i thought jetglo ! i remember the dual j-bass pickup mod and said to myself...why ?

looking at the inner sleeve right now and see no fireglo signs, no clear close-up body shots, headstock shot looks solid ...made in japan lp rick, still in original configuration.

what year and aprox. month did the center stripe appear ? my jan. '70 is solid.

Glover has said that while he liked the Rick, he didn't care for the overall sound in that he didn't feel like he was "underneath" the band the way he felt he should be. The Rick had too much mid which he felt muddied things up with what Ritchie and Jon were doing. Hence the J-bass add-ons.

Truly nasty look, IMO. And I don't mean good nasty. I mean nasty nasty.

i know there's a pic somewhere of roger holding the rick after restoration. here's a pic with luthier rauen holding it. a '71 would not have had the '60's pickguard. someone want to make a blow-up of the pic ?

I know, this is a confusing issue, Ronald (but not life-altering, of course). The link I originally posted clearly shows a FireGlo:

But I agree, all the pictures I've seen of RG actually playing it sure indicate a JetGlo.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a photo somewhere of DP's pile of equipment, with two Ricks, JG and FG with the dual J pickups. Anyone know where that photo is?

Likewise I've only ever seen photos and footage of a JG but maybe he had a FG done as a backup bass?

Hard to say - perhaps the neck pickup hasn't been re-installed and we're just seeing the body finish through the pickguard route.
