McCartney's 4001 Zerofret

The following photo is of Paul McCartney's 4001 headstock with the zerofret. It can be see in Bacon and Moorhouse's 1995 Bass History. There is a much earlier photo showing the zerofret in place when this bass was in its original fireglo finish. Perhaps someone reading this will be kind enough to send it in for posting. So why did McCartney make this modification to his bass? Had he become comfortable with the Hofner's zerofret setup, or did he just like the fretted sound with strings in the open position? Who knows? I would be interested in your comments.

The fretboard must have been changed??. How else could it be possible?
