Ok, I'm a sucker for a pretty girl with a guitar, so this week's artist is Priscilla Ahn. This singer/songwriter picked up the guitar at age 14, and by the time she was 16, she was looking for the nearest open-mic night, which happened to be at a local Borders Book Store. A professor at the college she was auditioning for suggested that she pursue a career in songwriting instead of going to school for music, so she made the move from Pennsylvania to LA, where after a short period of time, started getting regular gigs at the Hotel Cafe.
While still living in PA, she had an internship at a studio where Blue Note artist Amos Lee was recording his 1st EP. Apparently Amos told the folks at Blue Note to keep tabs on her, and after flying to New York to perform a showcase, she signed to the label.
I got to see her live a few times, and she put on a great show. In addition to her good looks and great voice, she's funny, telling stories about things that happened to her and the inspiration for her songs. The most amazing thing about seeing her live is her use of a loop pedal, as you can see in some of these videos. She'll do her own backing vocals, play piano, guitar, glockenspiel, and harmonica.
Take some time and read the blogs on her website. Enjoy!
