Most overrated/underrated bands/artists/genres
Re: Most overrated/underrated bands/artists/genres
Eddie Calvert 1955 and this was a number 1 in UK you don't get many trumpet players having number one's these days.
Lot of you guys/gals won't know him from Adam but bet Brian remembers him

Great stuff! I remember hearing that often over the years, - and two years before that, he had his first number 1 with "Oh Mein Papa."royclough wrote:Eddie Calvert 1955 and this was a number 1 in UK you don't get many trumpet players having number one's these days.

Or at least turn it right up so he can't miss all those nasty overtones that eminate from those monsters!

I sure do remember him Roy. "Oh Mein Papa" was a favourite of mine as a young boy as was "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White".

Under:
The Blasters
Arthur Lee and Love
Over:
Most of whats on current radio
re: Jimi Hendrix: The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Axis Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland are as good as anything The Beatles produced.
Depending on definition, I would put The Beatles and Hendrix in the Under column..as much praise as they get..they were still better then that!

RAP!....HA!!JakeK wrote: Keep in mind, these are only our opinions, so whatever one likes shouldn't offend the other.
Underrated:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
The Who
The Kinks
The Byrds
The Yardbirds
The Count Five
Neil Young
Jimmy Reed
Muddy Waters
Bo Diddley
Robert Johnson
Howlin' Wolf
Jeff Lynne
Overrated:
Michael Jackson
Bruce Springsteen
Jimi Hendrix (sure, the man could play, but I can never understand what he's saying!)
Elvis Presley
THE JONAS BROTHERS
Most teen pop
Most modern country
Almost all rap
I respectfully disagree with the above inclusion of The Boss and Jimi as over-rated......just my feeling for the "Born To Run" album and for Jimi's influence on so many mega-guitar heroes...but I agree with the Elvis thing......he was eye-candy for the gals, but he never WROTE anything......
I add to the under-rated, Todd Rundgren, The Eagles, Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher and the Bangles on looks and taste in guitars alone
I also add meself as UNDERRATED

Perhaps instead of a list of choices, you should have simply asked for our personal list.
To which I would ad The Beckies and Big Star as criminally underrated, if not completely ignored.

A lot of my favorite bands over the years have been underrated, and that's the way they like it!

On the other hand, personally speaking, I'd love it if songs I'd written ended up on TV shows, movie soundtracks, muzak, selling toothpaste, Oreo Cookies, sneakers, whatever, if it paid some mega bucks!

For under-rated, I'd go with:
UFO
Paul Westerberg
The Shirts (should have been huge)
I don't know about over-rated so much as there are a lot of artists I just didn't "get". Personally, I'm not sure I should point fingers while I'm still aspiring to be a One Hit Wonder.
Finally, for the bassists (as I am in the process of becoming):
"All the eyes in the room may be staring at the star, but they're shaking their butts to the bass guitar"
- "Joe's Blues" by Todd Snider
