CV or Nitro?

Paul,

are there simple ways to distinguish CV from Nitro?

No really easy way, especially on older finishes. Nitro will fluoresce under black light to some extent, but this is unreliable though much-touted by some. It also smells bitter and musty when it's sanded, but that's destructive.

Nitro is usually much thinner than CV, with polyester being thickest of all.
