Yup, the XLR is driven off of a separate winding, mostly to get the level and impedance right. XLR is "balanced" (or in modern parlance, "differential") signaling, nominally 600 ohms. In order to run both pickups out through a single XLR, you'd have to mix the signals and then buffer the impedance to match the balanced line. This could be done passively with resistors and transformers, but it gets difficult to make sure you don't degrade the signal, especially when you don't have a lot of drive power like you'd have from an active circuit...jps wrote:IIRC, the bridge pickup has an extra winding/leads for the XLR output that the neck pickup lacks, unless said bass has two bridge pickups (I think Dave Pascoe has same).
