Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
I recently re-recorded the lead vocal parts on this song - never was happy with the original take. This tune will probably need a complete remix, but in the meantime, I did a quick stripped-down mix just for the heck of it. The only instruments are drums, bass, acoustic guitar, and voice. Basses used were the '79 4001V63 JG for the bassline, and the '79 4001SLH was used for the steel drum sounds.

Mark – I did the comparison thing with the old and new… I do like the new vocals. Matter of fact I think I like them better than the JoyBomb version. In a way this stripped down version has a minimalist charm about it as well.
Re: Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
As do I. I plan to remix the song (full instrumental version) and put it on the JOYBOMB master, since it still hasn't been officially released! Besides, everything being internet releases these days, I can always swap out the new version for the old wherever I need to.

Loving the "steel drums" you put in there, great idea. Your main bass sound is cool too, seems to morph a bit through the song and I enjoy following that. I'm thoroughly impressed, it's a great tune. Your vocals are OK by me--somehow, some way, they vaguely remind me of Adrian Belew (I think), or maybe I'm just crazy. Just keeping doing what you are doing, I think it is working just fine.
Re: Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
Thanks, Josh. This was sort of a throwaway mix just for kicks. Listening back to it, I'd probably redo it adding a lot more bottom end to the morphing bassline.
Re: Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
How'd you get the 'steel drum' sounds?
Re: Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
I ran the bass through an octaver effect (up octave.) It's an old ART unit. By nature of it being a cheap processor, it adds that wash of chorus and phasing which to my ears sounds like steel drums. Sort of.
Re: Fantasy #29 in G major - (remix)
Mark, thanks for posting that. I liked it. The drums stomp, I love that. Bass sounds great. Mark

Hi, I'm completely out of my element with this genre; possibly an age thing, so I can't really comment much on the song itself.
I (once again) was impressed with your recording skills. You really got a lot of texture out of a few instruments. I thought I heard some pre-echo in some of the vocal lines, where the echo comes in a split second before the actual lead vocal. Cool effects on this one. Tom

Thanks, Tom. I know that odd stuff like this isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea, given the jangly sound that most Rick folks like, but it goes to show you the versatility of music that Ricks can enhance.
That pre-verb effect is a fun one. Back in the day, we did that by flipping the tape over and playing the song backwards and tracking the reverb that way. Doing it digitally is a similar process. I've also developed some sequencing tracks so we can perform the song with the same effect live.

This would indeed be a very good thing! ;^)walker wrote:.....so we can perform the song with the same effect live.
