Okay, you asked for it! Being honest...

1) I don't mind the stock tailpiece, but I liked it alot better without the 4003 treble pickup assembly. It looks like a very pretty girl needlessly went to a plastic surgeon and...uh, never mind, I'll stop there. I'm sure it sounds and play terrific. I remember seeing this Cii at the 2010 NAMM show and drooling over it.
2) Very cool! 8)
3) I like a little more than the first one, probably because its a solid finish, no pretty wood blocked or interrupted. I love 5 string basses, but I'm still trying to get used to the "two pounds of bologna in a one pound bag" look of the extra tuner crammed into the headstock. But I understand why you did it that way, Dane.
4) Excellent, perfection! Super cool! 8) 8) One of the best mods ever done! I'll fight ya for it, Todd!

Yes it was. I'll find a pic or two tomorrow.
You got the '10 NAMM 4004Cii FG and I got the '09 NAMM 4004Cii FG.

Mods are good or bad according to the forethought, materials, and skill which go into making them. That's how I look at it.

I definitely agree with the idea of it being modded with taste, just as much as I agree with the "do what you want". I always like Lemmy's mods to his 4001s by putting a vintage thunderbird pickup in the neck. When I met him a while back I asked if he still had it (before I saw the Rickenbacker tour video) and he said he still has it but the thunderbird pickup died years ago.

Both are fine looking basses. The stock version seems a bit too minimalistic, too contemporary, for my tastes however. The v57 mod is exactly what I was looking for. No harm in modding. Just finished reading Keith Richards' new book. He explained his journey into 5 string tuning, and mentioned he was having guitars customized for that express purpose.

Joey, what about the 2011 NAMM basses? I noticed Ric sent out a small batch of 4004 basses right after the show, a few of which went to the Music Zoo. They recieved a Trans Red Cii (already sold), a Mid. Blue Cii and the one I'm eyeballing, a killer looking Mid. Blue Laredo - would you by chance know if these are indeed the 2011 NAMM basses?

Thanks Jonathan, I chose the 4004 because of availability and the neck width/strength. Dane oversaw the conversion and adjusted the headstock to look more 4004ish. It has a huge sound! And is so light, weight wise… I just love the damn thing!

Dane, I like ‘em all! At first I was leaning the way of Joey with the surround on #1. But then I got to thinking that while it is being played that would actually look pretty cool with the hand coming in over top and all.

Not sure about those. They could be. I know that The Music Zoo had a few 4004's in stock already at the time of the NAMM show.
