RIP Elizabeth Taylor

Post by ram »

The end of a living legend - Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79... Great actress - one of the few women who could look pretty even when crying.

I met her when she lived down the road from us south of Charlottesville, VA. This was when she was married to John Warner, back in '86-7.

There was a delicatessen run by a Swiss lady near Scottsville, sort of in the middle of nowhere. I used to go in there from time to time to buy a handmade sandwich and a Heiny Dark. One day, there was Liz Taylor, shopping with a handbasket. Sunglasses and a babushka. I pretended she was invisible; didn't want to hassle her. She was tiny, maybe 5'1", and looked almost frail. Out next-door neighbor, who'd lived there all her life, said that Liz shopped there whenever she was in town with Warner.

A few years later, when I was back in Orange County, I had a girlfriend who lived in Emerald Bay, a gated community on the Coast Highway. Ironically, this girlfriend looked like Liz! We were walking on Emerald Bay's private beach, and she pointed out the house that Liz had bought for her then-husband, Larry Fortensky. It was night time and Liz and Larry were standing about 50 yards off in front of the house.

"Cleopatra" was & still is one of my all-time favorite films. Great actors, great performances, and superb sets & cinematography.

Rest in Peace, Elizabeth.
