60s bass machines...

Post by weemac »

A question for those in the know..

Are these: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/rickenbacker-400 ... 43a4de2f1e the same as the 60s machines?

My RM has some chrome machines from the late 60s that are not slotted (I think they are from a gibson bass) and I'm wondering if these klusons would be the correct part?

Eden,

These are the 70's version of Klusons, with the Phillips screws. The 60's versions are slotted. It's a minor point, but if you want to be exactly correct...

It's still closer than what I have on it at the moment....
Did the 60s ones have the plastic plate as well?

Yes, the posts on the vintage ones are slotted...not solid like on your bass & on Gibsons.
Also, the vintage tuners are nickel plated...not chrome.

The NOS '60s tuners I got from RIC-OUTLET came with the plastic plates, but IIRC, the ones that were on my '67 4005WB did not have them.

Those look just like the ones on my '73 Guild.

yes...the wonderous plastic plate that saved time during installation instead of template drilling 16 holes for the tuning key ear clamps.

Eden,

Without the plastic spacers the Klusons require little routs in the peg head to accommodate those protruding post-retaining brackets - your RM should have some little divots in the headstock. My Sep '74 has the Klusons without the spacers and with slotted retaining screws which leads me to believe that the seller's '73 was modified at some stage (maybe replacing exploded Grovers) or he really has a later '70s 4001 that he has misidentified.

Edit: You beat me to the punch Ronbo!

Guys, how are the early Rickenbacker bass tuners called? I mean ones put on late 50s basses. I can't find any info, are they Klusons?

You mean the big, goofy-looking ones?
