How to Record on iPad over an existing song

Post by rkbsound »

I am trying to learn/create some lead guitar riffs for the band I am with. I'd like to be able to listen to the songs we've practiced, which we record to MP3's, and then create new riffs over the track so that I can share the ideas with everyone else between practices, as well as remember what I came up with. So I'd be importing the track into the app, and then playing over it, saving the final version. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks. -Jeff.

Try in either Garageband which is now available on the iPad or in one of the amp aps. I'd try Garageband first. I've messed around with both on my iPad and have been able to record in both. Whether you can layer tracks is a different question, but my gut tells me that you can in Garageband.

If GarageBand works the same way on the iPad as is does on any Mac, yes you can add your own tracks to an existing mp3.

How does one go about plugging a guitar into the iPad?

The iRig...it's between $30 and $40 and hooks up to the standard guitar cable. There is also a jack to hook up headphones. The iRig then goes into the headphone jack on the iPad.

There is a dongle called the iRig that plugs into the headphone jack. There are probably other similar products out there.

My understanding is that you can't import am MP3 directly into the iPad GarageBand, but that if you have the computer GarageBand you can import it there and then transfer the GarageBand file to your IPad. (I don't have GarageBand on my computer and haven't tried this myself)

Yea, the iRig (I think from Griffin) works well with GB and the amp apps.

I would try that if yu want to go direct.

Make the stuff you'v done a into a single track and then drop in to GB and then your new guitar licks a separate track.

Ok -- sounds great. Thank you. So I will put the songs (MP3) into iTunes on the iPad, and then open Garageband and import the MP3 to Garageband and put it on a single track (it will let me do this?). Track 2 will be whatever I want to add with my Rickenbacker. Sounds simple!

The mp3 will end up on a single stereo track. When you open a New Track in GB it will ask if you are recording a Real Instrument Track or Software Instrument Track, you want the former for your guitar track.

Garage Band on the iPad is amazing value for money--$15.00 and it's loaded with features. Juliana and I are having a blast inventing tunes and mood pieces!

Yeah, it's great -- I just wish it was more flexible when it came to exporting songs and tracks to DAWs other than GarageBand for Mac.

A little OT, but how much memory did you buy for your iPad? Looks like they have 16, 32 and 64 GB sizes.

I use the I-Rig with Garageband on the IPAD, and export it to Logic 9 without any difficulties. I got a 64GB Ipad2 two weeks ago, after tearing a calf muscle and looking at 2-3 weeks on my back counting bugs on the ceiling. Turns out the Ipad, Irig and my guitars are very entertaining and quite useful as song development tools. Loading everything into Logic was pretty simple as well. I love this little gizmo.

You have to have the latest GB on your Mac (the one from ILife 11) for the export to work GB to GB, but Logic 9 takes the new GB files well. My I-Mac has I life 10 on it, never ugraded because I got Logic 9 and have used it since.

I think there's an iBugKill app for the iPad, if you're interested, Deano...
